Sean Armstrong insists he has no regrets about taking his leave from the inter-county stage at just 29.

His only regret is that he didn't fulfil the potential he showed when bagging a hat-trick of goals in Galway's All-Ireland U21FC final victory over Down nine years ago.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star ahead of Sunday's Connacht SFC semi-final against Mayo, he admitted: "That's the one thing, that I never believed I fully reached my own potential.

"Due to one thing or another, it didn't happen and it's a regret I have, but it's not something that keeps me up at night.

"It's a pity, I would have liked for my own self to reach the potential I thought I was capable of."

The Salthill/Knocknacarra clubman is comfortable with his decision and now spends much of his free time on the golf course.

"Funnily enough, I was out golf the Sunday morning (of the Leitrim game) and I've been doing a good bit of that for a relief from football," he explained.

"I haven't even gone back for the club and I'm thoroughly enjoying it, but I woke up (that) Sunday morning and I texted four or five of the boys who I played most of my tenure with and texted them 'good luck'.

"Coming home listening to it on the radio, I never got one feeling of regret or wanting to be there which is nice and reassuring.

"In saying that, Pearse Stadium on June 14, I'm sure it will be a different feeling. I'd love to be out on the pitch giving it welly."
