Galway accounts show 100k deficit

Galway GAA's accounts show a deficit of almost €100,000 for the year.

Due to the late staging of the county's SHC, Galway GAA's accounts show a deficit of almost €100,000 for the year.

The championship was suspended for two months after Turloughmore were removed for fielding an illegal player.

The 100k figure is misleading as annual accounts run until the end of October and the latter stages of the SHC are therefore not included.

Gate receipts from the knockout stage of the competition (the final between Gort and Portumna takes place this Sunday) are not included in the figures and the result is that a €67,000 profit from 2013 has been replaced by the deficit of close to €100,000.

"The gate receipts from these games will lead to a surplus for the year but showing a deficit on the annual accounts is one of the impacts of not finishing our championship as planned," hurling chairman Joe Byrne is quoted in The Irish Examiner.

The Galway hurling committee's income for the year was €724,554 (down from €1,048,929 in 2013) with expenditure of €821,709 (down from €981,153).
