Galway camogie legend Therese Maher admits she thought long and hard before deciding to hang up her hurl.

Maher announced her retirement from inter-county camogie last week having won her first All-Ireland senior title last year when Galway beat Kilkenny in the final.

To win an All-Ireland after losing her four previous finals during her 17-year career helped the former All-Star's decision that bit easier.

Speaking to the Connacht Tribune she said: "It wasn't an easy decision, but I suppose I could not have gone out on a better note. Tony gave me plenty of time. I thought long and hard about it all winter.

"I just felt it was the right time for me. I was enjoying it last year, but you don't get to play camogie forever."
