Forty-three-year-old Ollie Canning scored two points and won a number of frees which his brother Joe converted as Portumna retained their Galway SHC 'A' status at Gort's expense in Loughrea this afternoon.

The former county star, who is in his 26th season as a senior hurler, led by example as the four-time All-Ireland club winners edged victory by 0-21 to 2-14 in a thrilling SHC relegation playoff. A Greg Lally penalty brought Gort level near the end, but Portumna regrouped to win.

Meanwhile, Liam Mellows beat Oranmore-Maree by 1-21 to 1-14 in their SHC preliminary quarter-final at Pearse Stadium.
