Roscommon handed Galway their first Connacht MFC defeat since 2014 in dramatic fashion at Dr Hyde Park tonight.

Beaten All-Ireland finalists in 2018 and bidding for a historic five-in-a-row this year, Galway came into the contest with a 13-game unbeaten record in the province (12 wins, 1 draw). However, that run was brought to a halt by a determined Roscommon outfit who came out 1-17 to 1-15 winners having trailed by eight points at the half-way stage (1-11 to 0-6).

Nathan Grainger scored the game's opening goal on 11 minutes but it was Aaron Oyiki's 45th minute major that swung the tie in the Rossies' favour. Adam McDermott inspired the comeback for the hosts and contributed 0-7, including 0-5 after the break.

Played on a round-robin group basis with five rounds of games, Mayo also opened the provincial championship with a valuable win tonight.

Tomás Morley's side comfortably overcame Leitrim on a 1-20 to 0-6 scoreline at Ballinamore.

The winners held a 0-8 to 0-4 interval lead and pushed on from there with Frank Irwin, son of former Mayo goalkeeper Gabriel, netting their goal near the end.
