A superbly struck sideline cut from Joe Canning saw Galway edge out Dublin by 0-21 to 1-17 in today’s Walsh Cup semi-final encounter at Parnell Park.

Micheal Donoghue’s side made the most of a strong wind at their back to open up a seven-point half-time lead but they were forced to withstand a spirited late comeback from the hosts.

Canning’s stoppage time sideline cut separated the sides at the final whistle as the Tribesmen enjoyed a winning competitive start to 2019.

Cathal Mannion pick-pocketed the Sky Blues to the tune of 0-10 and the visitors led by 0-15 to 0-8 at the midway point.

Dublin – who had three wins in the competition under the belt before today – subsequently mounted a second-half rally which will provide manager Mattie Kenny with plenty of encouragement ahead of their Allianz HL campaign.

A scoring burst of 1-4 without reply in the closing stages got them back on level terms.

Their goal arrived courtesy of Sean Moran (penalty) but Canning came off the bench to swing the verdict in his team’s favour and they now have a final date with Wexford to look forward to.
