The Galway hurlers begin their competitive campaign this weekend minus the services of a whole host of regulars.

Galway take on Dublin in the Walsh Cup semi-final at Parnell Park on Sunday afternoon. Throw in at 2pm.

Obviously, the St Thomas contingent are focusing on the All-Ireland club SHC semi-final, while also out of the reckoning is Corofin’s Daithi Burke, while Adrian Tuohy, Joseph Cooney and more are unavailable.

Galway manager Micheal Donoghue told the Connacht Tribune that they are missing up to eleven players that featured in last year’s All-Ireland final, but he stressed that this just gives other players the opportunity to impress.

“If you look at the team we finished with (in the All-Ireland final), we are probably down eleven fellows. With that comes opportunity for other lads,” said Donoghue.

“Looking at the other county teams and how strong they are going at this time of the year, when guys do get the opportunity now, they have to take it. Even if it is in January, they have to say ‘yeah I am up for it’. That is the challenge for all the players and, in particular, the new fellows we brought in. They have to take the chance when they are given it.”
