Liam Mellows manager Louis Mulqueen believes that his charges have added a steeliness to the side this year.

Looking to defend their Galway SHC title against the previous year’s winners St Thomas this weekend, Mulqueen has been pleased to see his players grind out wins during this year’s championship.

Speaking to the Connacht Tribune, Mulqueen is confident that despite being underdogs, Mellows can see off the challenge of their opponents.

“From our point of view, I’m happy with the success this year as they didn’t melt,” said Mulqueen. “We stood up and won ugly, we got to the final game and now the big test is can we perform in a second county final.

“We just have to stand up and be able to compete with one of the best teams in Galway. Last year we beat Gort and some people said it was luck, it was a flash in the pan, but I wanted to get past this second year syndrome.

“To make sure that we didn’t buckle under it and that we basically came out of it, first of all being consistent and see if we could get back to the top four in Galway.”
