Four-time All-Ireland club champions Portumna are facing a battle to retain their senior status after Mullagh knocked them out of the Galway SHC at the weekend.

Joe Canning posted 0-14 for Portumna, but the early dismissal of Eoin Lynch on two yellow cards came back to haunt them as Cathal Dervan and Davy Glennon fired Mullagh to a 1-21 to 1-20 victory and condemned their opponents to a relegation playoff.

Champions Liam Mellows, 2016 winners St. Thomas', Loughrea and Sarsfields are all safely through to the quarter-finals, while Tommy Larkin's, Cappataggle, Castlegar, Gort, Tynagh-Abbey / Duniry and Turloughmore have qualified for preliminary quarter-finals.

Darragh Burke starred for St. Thomas' in their 1-19 to 0-13 win over Castlegar, while Liam Mellows came from a point down at half-time to beat Kilnadeema-Leitrim by 2-18 to 1-16, with Conor Kavanagh scoring both of their goals.
