Joe Canning reckons he should have scored the late free that would have drawn last month's All-Ireland hurling final.

While the free was from about 80 metres out, the Galway sharpshooter felt it was well within his range. However, his effort dropped short and Limerick held on to win the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the first time in 45 years after withstanding a fierce fightback from the holders.

"I should have got it. I wouldn't have went back if I didn't think I'd get it," he told Off The Ball.

"I probably tried to hit it too hard and I kinda mis-hit it a little bit. If I connected sweetly with it, it would have went over. It dropped in the square. There was only another three or four yards or whatever and that's the frustating thing.

"If I had have connected sweetly, who knows? But it would have been daylight robbery."
