Donegal for Sam 2017

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was fairly pessimistic about our chances of silverware this season but after watching the first 5 rounds of the league, I might have to change my outlook to positive.
Not saying just coz we beat Tyrone in a league game on a wet spring night in Ballybofey that everything's gonna be fine but the effort workmate and application of the young squad to date is very impressive.Roll on The Championship!

Very impressed with Donegal so far this year some very impressive new players and Murphy and Mc Hugh have been fantastic so far, Gallagher deserves a Hugh ammount of credit for what he has done so far this year.

At this stage last year there was probably a "Roscommon for Sam" thread on the go & see how that ended up.

One step at a time, we have a decent young side with loads of potential not to mention spirit.

That will do me for now.

What is the thinking on Rory Gallagher and his team building now among Donegal supporters. Is he beginning to win them over?

Yes, a league game in a wet Ballybofey in March isn't a basis for claiming we can win Sam, not by a long, long shot! Nice win and nothing more.

Rory is blessed that a group of talented youngsters, many of them still U21, have made the transition to senior very quickly.

While he takes some of the credit for this, there is no doubt in my mind that the fact that they came into an already strong set up made a huge difference. Having the likes of Murphy, Neil McGee & Frank McGlynn around you can only be good. This is one of the reasons teams like Kerry & Kilkenny continue to prosper, there is a culture already there that young fellas can plug into.

Another big change this year is that Murphy is now full time in the middle of the field, where he has been immense, instead of chopping & changing into the full forward line.

Donegal have won nothing yet & they may need another year or two to get to their best but things are looking a lot better than they did at the start of the campaign when all was doom & gloom.

Tyrone, Mayo and Donegal will be mounting the challenge from rural Ireland.

Kerry will be hard to beat, going on their Dr Crokes-style tactics from last night! Don't discount yourselves too, Kerry always there by hook or crook!

I'm enjoying people's reaction to Crokes. Crokes have been on the road a long time. They've played silky football and come up short. They've had some bad luck in that time as well. Their final performance was predictable after previous years. They had the nous. It was up to others to try and come up with the answers.

Cool the jets! I think we have the makings of a very good team and all the signs have been encouraging so far. Championship is always a different animal obviously, but on a given day I think we're a match for any team. I said it before Christmas and nothing I've seen has changed my mind.

Saying that a run to the All-Ireland is a lot to ask of a young team that has lost so much experience. I think they will be targeting Ulster in a big way which would be a huge achievement for them so early in their development.

Congrats to our lads on another great performance last night. We are on a roll and I have no problem with calling our performances very good. If people want to go around posting that we are contenders for the all ireland that is fine. I am sure they will be competing as strongly as the other top teams to try and bridge the gap. We are still massive odds to win the competition. If people go around saying that we are going to win sam, that is another topic altogether, as no team has the right to say that.

Great result from the new look Donegal team.I thought they were far more up for the game than our lad, which is disappointing.Maybe they had a greater want to avenge last years Ulster final result.Regardless ......good result for the young Donegal lads. They are a team taking shape and doing better than most expected.

Disagree. We are better than they were last year.

I think its hard to know how good Donegal are but we have had a better league campaign than most supporters thought. The real test will come in the summer but I do feel SAM would be a tall order for us, maybe in the next few years we can do it but not this year.

However I do think the Ulster title is a realistic target.
