Do these lads ever listen?

This will further congest a fixture calender that's already a mess and make it harder for counties with a thinner panel to qualify for the semi finals- like Tipp last year. It will crucify clubs, especially in Mayo, Dublin, Kerry, Tyrone and Donegal who have been near perennial quarter finalists. It's a money grab and nothing else.

Its a joke. So annoyed. Its fine having super 8 s but some counties have a much better chance of being in it due to our stupid provincial championship

As a club player, it's safe to say that this will be my last year playing GAA. No thoughts at all about the club player with this motion passing.
I call on all club teams to pull their county players back. We're sick of it!

I like it.Combined with the new AI final dates it will be a good move.

More matches between strong teams equals more entertainment.Fans want to see the best play the best.
Forces provincial championship to be run off quicker so we get to the real football earlier in the year.
Most teams will be gone before the Super 8 starts so it frees up an awful lot of time for those counties to play club matches.
With the All Ireland being played in august it will mean the Super 8's probably being over earlier than the quarter finals would be so more time for the club matches to be played. The earlier all ireland final dates free up more time.
The whole championship calendar will be tightened up so the tedious gaps between matches will be reduced. Which is better for players, media and fans.

This is a good idea and combined with the change in AI final dates and replays being got rid of there really should be no complaints from anybody.Plenty of time has been freed up for the clubs it's up to the county boards to do their job and organize their championships properly.I suspect it will lead to a barrage of complaints as that tends to be the way things work in the GAA.

Best of all this is probably the first step along the road of getting rid of the provincial championships and having a combined league and championship competition.

Yeah it's that simple. Kerry fans still won't turn up until a semi final. Will these matches be played in Croke park or various venues?

They want to milk the Dublin cash cow for all it's worth. The current Dublin team will win their first two games and there will be no one at their final group game.

like it or not the inter county championships is the main source of revenue for the gaa, which in turn some of it goes to the clubs which is Badly needed for player welfare and club facilities etc, it will create more interest in Gaelic games which should also benefit clubs, and It's going to be wrapped up a full month sooner which will also benefit clubs, more can be done especially for the weaker counties, the excessive amount of training that's required at intercount level, and these so called centres of excellence which also pits young players in club v county, but at least the gaa are doing something to help the clubs and also to make the championship more interesting and exciting it's a step in the right direction.

I would welcome any attempt to improve on the present system. Though I would still like the All-Ireland finals to be in September. However if it means that the All-Ireland Club Finals can be completed by Christmas then August it has to be. Interestingly if a vote was taken here on HS it would be much closer than the 76% to 24% vote at Congress going by the opinions expressed above.

Outrageous nonsense once again from the Gaa. I adore the games themselves, but not a fan of those who run them.

If the GPA have even a trace of a backbone, there should be an all out strike. Their proposal (which I think needed a bit of work) wasn't even allowed to go forward for consideration and then this silly nonsense comes in through the back door and gets approved, what a kick in the knackers!

They have a poll here on hoganstand (you should find it easy enough on the home page).

As I write this, with just over 4200 votes, its 75%-25% AGAINST the super8s.

I agree with the Super 8 being voted through. It's a stepping stone in the right direction. If it's a hit, I can see it expanding to 16 in 4 groups of 4 and hurling introducting 2 groups of 4.

Counties missing out on the respective group stages will have to reevaluate the merits of a second championship guaranteeing the winner direct qualification for the group stage of the following year. Time will tell.

One perceptive comment about the Super 8s was that the GAA has got its Champions League format, only it's the second group stage that was swiftly scrapped! It'll fill the coffers of county boards in Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone and Dublin, but can't see how it'll be of any benefit to playing standards in Carlow, Leitrim, Antrim etc. If we still need provincial championships, then run them in Jan/Feb, have championship group stages based on League seedings, and straight knockouts in July and August.

What way can you restructure a Gaa competition that includes Dublin, Kerry, Tyrone, Mayo, Donegal. that will give Leitrim, Antrim, Wicklow, Longford, Carlow a chance would you suggest.
