Finally a county that is not doing so well proposes a change to the championship that will benefit weaker counties (giving them more matches in the summer and a chance to develope) A round robin for the first 16 teams knocked out of the provincials is a great idea but will not even be heard if P Duffy's proposal gets through.
A combination of both would be a good start for now
I find it curious that we now have the knitial 16 Prov losers and the AI Last 8 only considered for round robin play. Certain Prov SF losers will play no round robin matches, while a 1sr Rd Qualifier might play six ! The Laois plan retains the existing unfairness -- to get to the AI Last 8, the Prov SF 16 still need to win 2 rounds - but the 1sr Rd Qualifier 16 must engage four. To bridge the gap - have a Champs Playoff Rd and 3 Qualifier Rds. How ? - Prov Final 8 play two 2-chance rounds, while all 24 others play 2 matches via 8 groups of 3 (8x1 eliminated).. Qual Rds 2 and 3 with team quantities of 20 and 12. 6 Rd 3 winners join 2 unbeaten Prov Champs in thd AI Last 8 (QFs, or 2x4 groups). Fair, Balanced, Tidy and Neat !
They won't be interested in the Laois proposal. There no money in Round Robin for weaker 16 teams. The big money is in the last 8 round robin ..Remember lads it's all about the Johnny Cash! Always has been and always will.
The league has started off with some decent crowds. I would like discussion and obsession with the championship structure to cease. There are games being played to be enjoyed.
Loosely delving into the topic, Laois have put a decent suggestion on the table.
I'd prefer the GAA's suggestion to include the final 16 in 4 groups of 4. If those missing out on that group stage saw merit in a second championship guaranteeing qualification in the following year, the second championship could also include a group stage. There has to be some give and take from all stakeholders to achieve an appropriate and suitable compromise for all. Two tournaments containing group stages works well in European club rugby and soccer. The template is there for the GAA to take note.

You are correct-it is unfortunately about the cash and nobody cares at the top where it comes from. Give the teams at the bottom some scraps and hope that they will go away and be happy for a year or two.
