Return of attacking football

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know it's early in the year but is it just me or are we beginning to see a return to attacking football particularly in the lower divisions of the league? Div 1 still has plenty of defensive teams ( Tyrone, Monaghan, Cavan) but the leading teams in the other divisions are certainly giving football a chance (Kildare and Clare
,tipp, Armagh and Sligo, Waterford and Westmeath).
Even Donegal are playing a lot more football this year. Who knows, we might get back to the football of the late 90s and 2000's if we are lucky

Cavan were a defensive team two, three years ago. They were one of the to scorers in last years league. The games Sunday wasn't about defensive football but rather awful shooting. Cavan had nearly 30 scoring chances but only converted 7. Creating 30 scoring chances is not defensive football. Cavan played Dublin and mirrored Dublin's set up yet everyone lauds Dublin as an attacking team despite the fact they had two sweepers.

Football goes in cycles - a return to attacking football is inevitable.

yea teams that are in the lower divisions cant defend properly. what a surprise. Thats why they are were they are and thats why Dublin could win Leinster with a second string team these days. will they ever learn!

the key is to be good at both defending and attacking. The teams at the top (Dublin, Mayo, Kerry and Tyrone) dedicate their time to both and they are the only teams in Ireland in with a shot of winning Sam for that reason.

Dont mix up high scoring games for a return to attacking football- the early stages of the leagues always produce high scoring games with fitness levels low, new players been tried out etc.

Championship will revert to wat been seen last few years...

I think that there will be no such thing as a totally attacking team nor a totally defensive team either. There will be stages during a game when it is beneficial to be one or the other. This is more like what we are going to see. A lot will depend on sensible refereeing too. I think that if a ref allows good advantages, allows quick frees and deals with sanctioning players later and penalizes slow play then we will have a template that we can move forward with.

I don't think I'd put our defence Down as a good defence, as we're brutal at the back,
We can't handle teams that run at us up the middle, we gave away 12 scoreble frees to mayo the last night which 9 of them were kicked over the bar.
We conceded another 12/13 scoreble frees to Donegal the week before including a penalty .
The dubs scored 22 points against us the semi last year of which I'd 12/14 points were frees.
Our backs can't tackle to save their lives.

What exactly gave you the idea Cavan were a defensive team?

C'mon Breff you know how this works.

It was true 5 years ago (or wasn't, doesn't really matter Brolly said they were) so therefore it 'logically' follows that it's still true now.

How many of these teams have you watched this year? Defensive football never existed as such, teams just learned how to defend properly. If you actually watch these defensive teams in action you would see most of them break at pace with up to 13 players flying forward in attack. The whole puke football and defensive football lingo was a load of crap that had zero proper analysis of it.

There's no point in looking for perfection KB. Every team in Ireland concede frees and judging your county in February won't tell you much about where they'll be in the summer months. In 2014, Kerry had a very average at best league campaign and ended up winning the AI playing a defensive brand of football in the final, it worked, it helped them achieve what they couldn't do two years previous in the quarter finals by playing a more attacking brand. You simply cant make the semi finals and finals on a regular basis anymore unless you have a good balance between defence and attack.

I would agree with you fully gotmilk, what did pundits want ?, to let teams waltz through you with out working hard and tracking back, better to stand with a peaky cap on with a fag in the mouth and not move.

I don't think it is a load of crap. Maybe it's because I was unaccustomed to it for years, but there are few uglier sights on a sports field imo than lads playing gaelic football, kicking the ball across the field at a slow tempo to unpressured teammates in their defense or middle third, trying to plot a way through 15 opposition players parked inside their own 70 yard line. It is puke! it is very ugly to look at imo. As David Brady said the other night ' the Cavan bus was nicer than the Monaghan bus though'. He didn't mean nicer to look at, I felt, but nicer, as in more acceptable and understandable from the underdog away side. Even the guru of defense Jim McGuiineas had a piece on last year's drawn Connacht final saying something would have to be done about the state of football, when both sides rush to put 15 men inside their own 70 on defense, all the time. Jimmy even hinted that this stuff was OK for and from Donegal, but it wasn't the Galway way. I don't know if Jimmy wrote that ,but bizarrely his name was on the column.

I agree with that gotmilk. Although I would suggest that it's easier to defend that it is to attack. and it's easier to coach defence and defenders than it is to coach attacking play. Sometimes I watch my own county and they defend brilliantly get a turnover sweep out of defence at pace , pass their way through midfield and then get to the opposing 45 and look as if they don't know what to do next. maybe breaking at pace is over-rated ,perhaps if players had a pre-determined plan of how to turn defence in to attack that didn't involve simply passing the ball to each other up to the opposing 45' it would serve them better. This is where coaches should be earning their money. I see some teams using a long ball in to space which is much more energy efficient . but you need willing runners in the forwards who are extremely fit and can turn quickly. you also need to keep a few players up in the forward line . perhaps that is too traditional but there needs to be a happy medium cause at the moment sometimes it resembles rugby-league , up and down the field until you lose possession and start over again.
