The Inter-Provincials

John Tobin, Galway manager of the Connaught team, suggests that they could be played off on the Friday and Saturday nights of the All-Ireland weekends. I think this might be a good idea, building it into 'An All-Ireland weekend' package. It might also bring players from counties outside the AI finalists into the reckoning for All Stars consideration, if the games were televised. I accept that you would be short of players involved in the final and the 'Sevens' but I think it''s an idea worth considering. At the moment I don't think we are maximising the finals weekends (compared to how rugby and soccer market their big week-ends) and the the Inter-Proventials are being booted all over the place. What do posters think?

Yeah right in the middle of the busiest time of the year for the club calendar just when all championships are in the middle of the knock out stages sure why not throw another competition in there. The inter pros are finished have been for a long time many county players dont even make themselves available anymore. Cant they just see this and scrap it...

The interpros aren't so much dead but definitely moribund, but some people really insist on them so you may as well try it and see if it works. Every initiative to resurrect it has failed (playing the final abroad, televising it, introducing a fifth team).

The interpros had their day when there was no club championship beyond county, when one game a year was televised, when there was no internet, when the league had far less importance, and when there were no qualifiers. These days it's nothing unusual to see the top players regularly square off in an expanded all Ireland format, available on TV and the internet. The whole "top players from all teams against each other" mystique of the interpros is gone.

I'm not sure where he "no club activity" idea from the Connacht managers suggestion comes from, in Meath we most certainly had club championship games on both the hurling and football All Ireland weekends.

No one cares about the inter pros.

They're dead.

Jesus couldn't bring them back.

I think it's a good idea, definitely worth a shot, I also think it's a good idea to make it as huge a weekend as possible.

The Interpros are dead and gone. They weren't played in 2015 due to the weather and nobody even missed them - not even the National press - who constantly look for inadequacies in the GAA. Due to the bad weather last December they were shoved onto January 2016, but when January rolled around the Interpros didn't happen (CCC brushed them under the carpet). The Interpros are dysfunctional at best and are a waste of money for the provincial councils. The only beneficiaries of the interpros are the Galway Hurlers who get 2 good challenge games each year at the expense of the Connacht council.

The only way of reviving it would be to have it as a singles weekend with plenty of drink with only single men and women aloud to take part. A bit of a Lisdoonvarna for the GAA fraternity. There would be lads coming out of retirement for it!!!

No club C'ship is most of the year, it would be easier pick the six winning numbers of the lotto than guess when you would be playing club C'ship. The province he represents, the various counties fixture Masterplan booklets were books of fiction. Perhaps he should promote club games activity in the province instead of looking for another date for inter county players playing inter pros, it beggars belief but just reinforces the fact that all they want is Inter County activity, exposure & glory.

Might have a hard time getting a Connacht Hurling team together for the Friday/Saturday if Galway happened to be in the hurling final that year.

I think the GAA should start a Northern Ireland V Southern Ireland series in Gaelic football. A team from 6 county Ulster plays a team from the Southern counties. This would be the first real international of Gaelic football imo.

What is this Southern Ireland entity you speak of?

If All-Ireland club finals move to December, possibly inter-provincial finals can be hosted on St. Patrick's Day?

Would it matter? Nobody has any interest in the interpros anymore. Take them off artificial life support and let them die naturally.

A good idea and there would be a good turn out - better idea than Tobin's.

Just looked at the Munster squads announced for this. The players obviously still want it as there's a host of great players on both (particularly the hurling squad). I've no doubt the series would rise again given the right platform.
