Will Gooch retire?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Will the greatest forward of them all Colm Gooch Cooper retire if Dr Crokes win the All Ireland? At 34 next season and winning the greatest club prize on offer would there be much point in staying on with the Kerry seniors who are building to the future with there great minor players coming through? Personally I think if he wins the Club I think he will retire in glory and I also think he should. Don't out stay your welcome a few kerry players have already done that and it just holds back the team and talent coming through.

I agree with you I think if crokes won the club championship gooch would ride off into the sunset a happy man .
But crokes won't win the club championship IMO. Corofin will beat them.

He'll be there in 2017 to wreak havoc on the Dubs yet my friend.

A typhoon is building in Kerry and is due to hit you all next June!

Does it carry a yellow, orange, or red warning from Met Éireann, or is it all hot air?

And be blown out of power by August/Sept.

Like Kerry of late, once you weather the early storm there isn't much left in the tank by them for the long haul.

Great player the Gooch but i feel his best days are behind him.To be honest,as a Dub,it's been a while since i worried about the Gooch and i'd be surprised if he dominated a game against us again. The fear factor is gone with Donaghy,Gooch,Darren O Sullivan etc. It's how these talented and successful Kerry youngsters develop into men that has me concerned.

He only has a max of 3/4 games to play if Kerry get to all Ireland final.. so he should be able for that... even at 34

I believe he will stay on assuming he is injury free. I don't think anybody would begrudge him if he decided to call it a day, but he may feel like he has unfinished business in the Green and Gold jersey. If he is used properly he has a huge part to play in the Kerry set-up for at least another season, and could be captain as well. I think he would be best suited to an impact sub role from now on. Remember how effective Peter Canavan and Maurice Fitzgerald were coming off the bench in the twilight of their careers. No reason Colm Cooper can't play that part, it depends on whether the hunger is there. None of the above really depended on pace or athleticism so age may be less of a factor for these types of players.

Can someone who knows Gooch relay this message to him? It seems it's very important. He must retire this year to please Clondalkindub. Win the club and don't come back. Ever.

The greatest player has a big decision to make "if" Crokes win the Club , I think it's a good talking point on a Gaa forum.

One trick ponies days are over, time for the young blood to step forward, agree with the Cavan man though, Kerry only have maybe 3 or 4 competitive games to win the All Ireland, ridiculous this championship structure.

10 or 15 years ago he would have been the man, but the game is not just simply for pure footballers any more. You have to have a few other things going for you including physique. I think that that is where he is a bit lost. Hopefully we will see him playing a great club championship and who knows after that, but he has been at sea against the top teams over the past couple of seasons.

If he does stay on then I don't think he should be an automatic starter anymore. He could be really effective as a sub but starting ahead of a younger guy like BJ Keane makes no sense to me. Kerry have won the last 3 minor All-Ireland's, surely it would be better to go with the young players.

A truly great player in his pomp.

I agree the structures are flawed but hopefully Padraig duffys new recommendation will go some way to evening things up.
Thrust me we aren't happy cake walking Munster , it's boring and no test till we hit the quarters or semis.

Funny how no-one ever mentions the cake walk Dublin get to the Q-finals this past decade Kingdomboy isn't it.

Tis just the preferred stick to beat us with these days I suppose.
