Mattie McGleenan new Cavan boss

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Thoughts everyone? Seems a potentially excellent appointment to me, he had a very respectable playing career with Tyrone, playing in the AI Final in '95.

Has had major success with Scotstown, 3 county titles in 4 years after decades without one. Yes, they have some class players but the squad seem to do the business for him.

Best of luck

A lot depends on who he takes in with him.
He'll have no favourites as he's an outsider and will give everyone a chance.
I wish him the best of luck.

Agree with the previous poster on depending who his management team is. Mattie has a great reputation in Tyrone for being a great coach but that doesn't make him a good manager. If he has a good backroom team that can assist him with the difficult decisions then it could be a great move for Cavan Football.

Better appointment than Banty that is for sure, he done a good job in Scotstown but had some great players to work with at club level.

He's got a big reputation in Tyrone and this will have caught a lot of people by surprise as he'd have been considered in the mix for the Tyrone job (if) when Harte's contract expires next year.

Think it's a great move for Cavan who have shown they are at Tyrone's level in their first game this year. They need to push it on from there now and this could be a masterstroke for them. McGleenan is a winner.

Delighted with the appointment.

He's got a bit of work to do as he'll be straight down to business with the Dubs visiting Breffni for the first round of the league.
Survival in division 1 will be his remit in terms of the league and it will be no mean feat - we are one of the favourites for the drop.
We'll await the championship draw before setting expectations too high, but an Ulster title is definitely withing the capabilities of this Cavan squad.

Mick McCormick ex Longford and Gowna is part of his backroom at Scotstown as is Colin McAree ex Monaghan Minot manager. The Scotstown success is not all down to Mcgleenan. It will be interesting to see if they are part of his backroom with Cavan

He appears the best of the 3 who were in for the job and is sometimes good to bring a manager from outside as he brings no baggage with him. The manager will only be as good as his selectors/backroom team and players. - no doubt Cavan are on the up and was always a well supported county.

Best of luck to Mattie. I hope he assembles a good backroom team as I think this will be key to progress.
Much better appointment than Banty.

I hear Colin McAree has joined our backroom team (yet to be confirmed) so that could rule him out but id say Cavan will be sending their own selectors..........Mattie done well with Scotstown, they beat the best team in the county (Clontibert) twice in three meetings and were very unlucky not to beat Cross in the Ulster Final last year............but they have gone back abit this year, missing their best forward doesnt help,so id say they will be beaten on Sunday against Killcoo..............Cavan job isnt as attractive as it would off been 3 years ago.........remember they let in 5-19 against a ordinary Tyrone team so there is a massive job to be done to bring them to the level needed to reach Ulster Finals never mind win them.

Ah come on now, it was only 5-18 ;)

Seriously tho - that game was a complete collapse and probably the one that ultimately forced Hyland's hand.
He didn't look to have a plan to stop Peter Harte and that's suicide against Tyrone.
Remember, Tyrone won every meaningful game they played this year apart from Mayo and ourselves first time round and were being built up by some to be the team that would stop Dublin - they are not an ordinary side by any stretch of the imagination.

Was afraid of this, good appointment for Cavan football and indeed football in general - not a blanket defence manager. Wish him well, I think

Good appointment if it's just him but a great appointment if McAree is with him to two work very well together. Not sure we're people are getting the not a defensive coach bit Scotstown have been playing with two sweepers since he's came in, swapping between Turly, Morgan and Mohan this year.
When he first game in there was a lot of politics in Scotstown that had seen them become serial under achievers despite being very dominant in underage. Possibly some comparisons with Cavan in that sense?

of course you know we are guarenteed to draw Tyrone in first round of Ulster. nevertheless, welcome on board Mattie. but before he thinks about Cavan he has to prepare his team for Kilcoo and maybe an ulster final.

There certainly would have been up to 5 years ago but Hyland did a good job of rooting out the dead wood in that sense. He knew he had good youngsters coming through and he got rid of many of the old guard and any of the wasters in the squad.
Mattie will be working with a group of seriously committed and talented players.

"He is believed to have recruited trainer Colin McAree of Monaghan Harps as he puts together his backroom team."

From yesterday's Belfast Telegraph

Also:

"It has emerged that McGleenan could have to prepare for Division One without the services of Cavan's 2013 All-Star nominee Cian Mackey.

In recent weeks the flame-haired attacker has moved to London to work at his trade as a plumber and has commuted home for training as his club Castlerahan has made the county final, earning a draw against Ramor United in Breffni Park last Sunday, with the replay fixed for this weekend.

Convincing Mackey to stay and selling his vision could be McGleenan's first task in charge of the Breffni blues."
