Thoughts everyone? Seems a potentially excellent appointment to me, he had a very respectable playing career with Tyrone, playing in the AI Final in '95. GallantJohnJoe (Cavan) - Posts: 329 - 10/10/2016 21:46:35 1924706 Link 0 |
A lot depends on who he takes in with him. Cavan_Slasher (Cavan) - Posts: 10253 - 10/10/2016 22:18:10 1924714 Link 1 |
Best of luck Cavan with your new appointment. Laois76 (Laois) - Posts: 1270 - 10/10/2016 23:37:34 1924728 Link 0 |
Agree with the previous poster on depending who his management team is. Mattie has a great reputation in Tyrone for being a great coach but that doesn't make him a good manager. If he has a good backroom team that can assist him with the difficult decisions then it could be a great move for Cavan Football. Tyrone Gaa (None) - Posts: 403 - 11/10/2016 08:59:43 1924756 Link 0 |
Better appointment than Banty that is for sure, he done a good job in Scotstown but had some great players to work with at club level. Muineachain76 (Monaghan) - Posts: 180 - 11/10/2016 09:02:56 1924757 Link 0 |
He's got a big reputation in Tyrone and this will have caught a lot of people by surprise as he'd have been considered in the mix for the Tyrone job (if) when Harte's contract expires next year. GetOverTheBar (Tyrone) - Posts: 1388 - 11/10/2016 10:23:35 1924788 Link 1 |
Delighted with the appointment. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5010 - 11/10/2016 10:31:36 1924794 Link 0 |
Mick McCormick ex Longford and Gowna is part of his backroom at Scotstown as is Colin McAree ex Monaghan Minot manager. The Scotstown success is not all down to Mcgleenan. It will be interesting to see if they are part of his backroom with Cavan FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2763 - 11/10/2016 12:12:29 1924852 Link 0 |
He appears the best of the 3 who were in for the job and is sometimes good to bring a manager from outside as he brings no baggage with him. The manager will only be as good as his selectors/backroom team and players. - no doubt Cavan are on the up and was always a well supported county. browncows (Meath) - Posts: 2342 - 11/10/2016 12:45:44 1924868 Link 0 |
Best of luck to Mattie. I hope he assembles a good backroom team as I think this will be key to progress. FrDougalMaguire (Cavan) - Posts: 152 - 11/10/2016 12:46:20 1924869 Link 0 |
I hear Colin McAree has joined our backroom team (yet to be confirmed) so that could rule him out but id say Cavan will be sending their own selectors..........Mattie done well with Scotstown, they beat the best team in the county (Clontibert) twice in three meetings and were very unlucky not to beat Cross in the Ulster Final last year............but they have gone back abit this year, missing their best forward doesnt help,so id say they will be beaten on Sunday against Killcoo..............Cavan job isnt as attractive as it would off been 3 years ago.........remember they let in 5-19 against a ordinary Tyrone team so there is a massive job to be done to bring them to the level needed to reach Ulster Finals never mind win them. hardcore (Monaghan) - Posts: 1366 - 11/10/2016 13:50:16 1924902 Link 0 |
I wish him well and hope that Cavan continue to progress under his management.

Ah come on now, it was only 5-18 ;) Seriously tho - that game was a complete collapse and probably the one that ultimately forced Hyland's hand. He didn't look to have a plan to stop Peter Harte and that's suicide against Tyrone. Remember, Tyrone won every meaningful game they played this year apart from Mayo and ourselves first time round and were being built up by some to be the team that would stop Dublin - they are not an ordinary side by any stretch of the imagination. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5010 - 11/10/2016 14:50:01 1924942 Link 0 |

Was afraid of this, good appointment for Cavan football and indeed football in general - not a blanket defence manager. Wish him well, I think mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1044 - 11/10/2016 17:02:55 1925001 Link 0 |
Looking forward to the draw on Thursday night now. Give us Monaghan in Breffni, jaysis we would love it.... MadgeKing (Cavan) - Posts: 493 - 11/10/2016 19:38:45 1925076 Link 1 |
Good appointment if it's just him but a great appointment if McAree is with him to two work very well together. Not sure we're people are getting the not a defensive coach bit Scotstown have been playing with two sweepers since he's came in, swapping between Turly, Morgan and Mohan this year. of course you know we are guarenteed to draw Tyrone in first round of Ulster. nevertheless, welcome on board Mattie. but before he thinks about Cavan he has to prepare his team for Kilcoo and maybe an ulster final. s goldrick (Cavan) - Posts: 5518 - 11/10/2016 22:46:42 1925185 Link 0 |
There certainly would have been up to 5 years ago but Hyland did a good job of rooting out the dead wood in that sense. He knew he had good youngsters coming through and he got rid of many of the old guard and any of the wasters in the squad. Mattie will be working with a group of seriously committed and talented players. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5010 - 11/10/2016 23:41:51 1925203 Link 0 |
"He is believed to have recruited trainer Colin McAree of Monaghan Harps as he puts together his backroom team." From yesterday's Belfast Telegraph Also: "It has emerged that McGleenan could have to prepare for Division One without the services of Cavan's 2013 All-Star nominee Cian Mackey. In recent weeks the flame-haired attacker has moved to London to work at his trade as a plumber and has commuted home for training as his club Castlerahan has made the county final, earning a draw against Ramor United in Breffni Park last Sunday, with the replay fixed for this weekend. Convincing Mackey to stay and selling his vision could be McGleenan's first task in charge of the Breffni blues." GallantJohnJoe (Cavan) - Posts: 329 - 12/10/2016 10:38:38 1925262 Link 0 |
