Meath win 1988 Replay, similarities with Dublin

(Oldest Posts First)

I was watching this post 1988 football final replay clip a few days ago. There are some similarities with what was said about the Meath team being tired etc after their drawn final and what a few of us have mentioned in the analysis of Dublin's performance on Sunday last.

See what ye make of it, 16 min or so.

My God 28 years ago, that's scary and depressing in equal measure. By that stage Meath had won the Centenary Cup in '84, three Leinsters in a row in '86, '87 and '88, two All Ireland's in '87 and '88 and a national league in '88 so they certainly had a lot of football played. In that replay Meath were driven on by a perception that they had been bullied by Cork in the drawn game, Meath tried to win the drawn game by being "nice footballers" and it almost backfired. Both teams openly hated each other at the time so Meath had huge incentive and were pumped up for the game, the sending off of Gerry McEntee only strengthened their resolve and determination. If you see Colm O'Rourkes celebration after scoring a point with his right you'll get an idea of how pumped Meath were. Not sure if Dublin have the same incentive or reasoning now as Meath had then but you could argue that the Dubs faced a physical contest last Sunday they haven't faced in a while, as the saying goes it could make them or break them for the replay. I don't think the same level of animosity exists between the Dublin and Mayo players as it did between Meath and Cork at that time, it was a different game, different championship and vastly different players in terms of preparation and methodology.

That was one of the biggest rivalries of all time in gaa. Some massive hits in those 4 games, 1987, 2 games 1988 and 1990. It was like the Galway/Tipp hurling one of the 1980s. The Tony Keady affair brought that to it's height.

Wasn't it when most of the Meath team came to John Kearns', Cork, funeral that the tension finally broke.

it is hard to believe it's 28 yrs alright. How chapish Michael Lyster was. And the late gentleman Enda Colleran on analysis. I always found him very impartial. I know Bernard Flynn was young and only 50 now but he's aged well!

Difference today is that Dublin are described as been very physical and us? Well the words wouldn't make it on here how we were described! :)

That's true and the mainstream media made hay out of us, I recall an article from the RTE Guide off all things from
1991 which was particularly hateful and provoked a response from the county board, if I recall correctly the author of the piece was never let near the RTE Guide again. It was open season on Meath at that time, the Dubs don't realise how handy they have it nowadays :-)

Yes the untimely death of John Kerins brought them together, although I think there had been some thawing prior to that, but his death ended all animosity. Sean Boylan led the team into the church for his funeral, a class thing to do but also the proper thing.

I was thinking that. I read it somewhere. Probably Boylan's bio.

It's amazing the volume of stuff that's uploaded onto youtube. Great to see archival things like that. I download all these bits and pieces and put them on a mass storage device and watch them on tv.

Also in that clip the dressing rooms in Croke Park look so plain, most clubs have a better setup now. Not surprisingly, it's almost 30 yrs ago.
