Connacht/Ulster Refs?

(Oldest Posts First)

Pat O Connor was complaining that Leinster refs get more big games than Munster refs? Surely the time has come to pass the whistle around the island? Can a Connacht ref have the Dublin/Mayo final for example?

this is a major problem that needs to be addressed

We don't have a ref in Ulster up to the standard of refereeing an All Ireland final at present.

Of the refs I know in Connaught, I don't think they do either.

Out of a panel of 18, only 2 referees are from Connacht- Paddy Neilan (Roscommon) and Marty Duffy (Sligo). Cant see either getting the final, Paddy is only in his 2nd year on the panel. I certainly don't agree with a ref from either participating province in charge in any game. It only leads to silly comments like I seen on HS yesterday about the ref being from Dublin's neighbours and working in Dublin.

I wonder though is this just a cap in the hand mentality that has the north and the west on bended knee for decades. The GAA is a monolith that is ruled by the "old boys club". If there are no good refs in our 14 counties there needs to be affirmative action taken to train a panel of men and women, I'm sick of Munster and Leinster with their" House of Lords" attitude.

I'm not sure I follow you to be honest.

Joe McQuillan has done 2 of the last 5 finals despite not being the best ref in Cavan, never mind Ireland.

Pat McEneany was the best in his prime and I think he refereed 4.

I've said on another thread I think Deegan should ref the final - nothing to do with him being from Leinster, he's just the best referee around right now IMO.

If a certain ref from Connaught gets the All-Ireland final , I will be watching the Fair City omnibus.
