End replays - Put the players first!

(Oldest Posts First)

I know, realistically I'm asking for something that just wont happen, But I think its time to bring an end to replays or at the very least only have them if the game is level after 2 periods of 10 minutes extra time. The amount of energy both Kilkenny and Waterford put into todays game, mentally and physically...for there not to be a result at the end of it all and to have both teams recover (especially mentally) in the space of 6 days and go for it all again is asking a lot of the players who probably have to plan another week now around work and family commitments when it could really have been sorted there today. Sure its great for the Neutrals that we've another 70 minutes, But you have to feel that all that effort from both teams today was for nothing. And for fans who will now have to fork out more money and travel to a different venue on Saturday evening, Its not really fair on them either. Besides, I don't think anybody would have objected to another 20 minutes of hurling there today ?

A big part of the football proposal that came out this week included having any drawn knockout ties be settled by extra time first before going to a replay only in the event of the game still being tied.

Hopefully it gets through. HQ genuinely want to get rid of them, it's just whether not congress are going to approve.

A good point. I wonder what the players think about it.

Maybe it isn't such a mad shout then.

Like I say I know its great to get another 70 minutes as a neutral, But its not fair on the players and the fans who have to fork out more money.

That game was amazing today in my view, Another 20 minutes of it wouldn't have disappointed anybody.

Despite the amazing high standards in the game today, When the ref blew up at the end it still felt like an anticlimax cause there was no definitive outcome.

At the end of the day doing the right thing is what is important, time for change, replays are strange almost unique to GAA, that is no a reason to keep them at all. Game has moved on is incredibly demanding. The game today deserved a winner, somehow walking out of a game like that you feel a bit cheated and the players I am sure feel the strain. That said a great epic battle, chances of the replay being a repeat is slim.

In general I agree but when you look at game today a replay seems a fairer option

Waterford totally lost their shape in the last 10 mins and had gone into panic mode - I feel they would not have been able to readjust for extra time and Kilkenny with momentum would have won easily

At least Waterford have a chance to regroup

Not sure i agree - those players could have picked up serious injury playing on for another 2 halves of extra time today..ideally replays with proper rest periods. Theres no physical way they will be able to repeat that performance in 6 days
