Managers talking up the opposition

(Oldest Posts First)

I had a listen to Tom Cribbin on Colm Parkinson's show online last night and I must say it was refreshing how straight he called it. As a Mayo fan I 100% agree with him that we are not firing at the minute and that Rochford is still figuring out tactics and his best team. I also agree that Mayo do not have the quality of Dublin and as they do not have the celtic crosses in their back pockets, do not have the same aura as the Dubs.

To be honest I was expecting to hear the usual spiel talking up the opposition to the point where you know that its just lip service.

Compare that to the interviews in print from Eamon Fitzmaurice on Clare and to a lesser extent Kevin Walsh on Tipp. You'd swear Kerry werent even going to bother showing up on Sunday!

Are managers genuinely afraid that what they say will be put up on the wall in the opposition dressing room?

I for one would rather hear the honest assessment like what Tom Cribbin gave on my own county.

That's unfair on Fitzmaurice. I think he made a very accurate observation, the disrespect shown to Clare and Tipp for reaching the last 8 is pretty poor form.

Look at the commentary on this forum, they way people are going on you would swear both had just been names drawn from a hat.

Clare are in the Q-final on merit, Fitzmaurice was simply articulating that and that he thinks they will give Kerry a better game than they did in June.

Kerry do not take any opposition lightly, that's why we are rarely caught.

Think it's a bit of fun myself. They don't believe what they're saying, you don't believe what they're saying and they know you don't believe what they're saying, so it's all harmless. On the other hand Rochford will be able to say to the lads on Saturday "yer man Cribbin says ye'r sh**e". Colm Boyle won't like that!!

It's possible to be honest without being disrespectful...

I doubt that but hope you are right. We don't have a settled 15, we're not playing well, midfield is not as good as past few years though Parsons will improve it. Diarmuid O'Connor looks the only decent scoring prospect from play as young Regan is untested at this level. Backs are slack enough.

We're giving Westmeath no chance after making heavy weather of Fermanagh and Kildare ? Westmeath knew months ago they wouldn't win Leinster so I'm thinking why should they peak for a Leinster Final. Surely they're set to peak for Saturday. Does Tom Cribbin sound like a man in charge of a team getting a hiding on Saturday night?

People are looking too much into our form since 2011 and ignoring 2016. The gap between Westmeath this championship, who have plenty of Croke Park experience, is not such a big one. I don't expect a big win but I do think we will beat them. However a Westmeath win would not be a shock.

Gerry, is that interview with Parkinson on Joe.ie?

A Westmeath win would be a huge shock.

Mayo took Kildare to the cleaners. Whatever about the final score, the game was over before half time.

Westmeath barely scraped past Kildare, I'd also say if Kildare were playing Westmeath again that Kildare would be handy favourites with the bookies in spite of that loss.

Westmeath also got trounced in last year's championship to Fermanagh. You'd a bit of a tricky one against them. There was a decent wind in the first half of that game. You got a bit of luck with the penalty but you probably deserved one before that anyway. You were comfortably better than Fermanagh in that second half.

There's very little evidence to suggest anything but Westmeath getting hammered. It doesn't take much to make a Leinster final these days, so long as you avoid Dublin.

Cribben and Fitzmaurice are playing the exact same game.

It's just the tack is different depending on whether you're the favourites or the underdog.

Managers only talk up the opposition when they fully expect to win.

Mayo are way ahead of westmeath who will be playing in Division four next spring. Stronger, faster, better forwards, dont tell me o connor x 2 plus andy moran, the o sheas wont relish being back in croke park. Its a second home to them at this stage. They are a serious team, that will take beating.
Westmeath showed absolutely nothing in the leinster final that was different from last year. A successful 30 mins against dublin is not progress when they did the same thing last year and then got hammered against fermanagh

Mayo to win at a canter and win the All Ireland

We will beat Westmeath BUT any return to the Galway performance would see a shock.
