Obsession with League Position

(Oldest Posts First)

What's the obsession with league football and hurling from June to September?
I hear more about the leagues them than when they're on! Div 1 team playing div 3 etc!!
They've no impact what so ever on cship. None!!
Clare won hurling all Ireland the year they were relegated. Roscommon flew in the league and collapsed in the cship. Tipp were missing a load of players in the league (still missing a good few) and didn't get promoted but still having their best run.
If I hear one more mention of league performances I'll go mad!

You're confused.

The League is a good indicator of championship. There will be some exceptions but generally it is true that the higher you are in the league the better chance you have in thr Championship.

Since 2011 Dublin have won 3 All-Ireland titles and 4 NFL titles. Prior to 2011 Dublin had been making no impact on the League.

well the talk about div 1 being well above div 2
well mostly by the pundits and so called experts
and that you had to be in div 1to make a big impact in latter part of championship
has been exposed this year anyway
cork div1 beaten by div 3 tipp
mayo and roscommon div 1 beaten by div 2 gaway
monaghon div 1 beaten by div 3 Longford
Donegal div 1 beaten by div 2 tyrone
down div 1 beaten by longford div 3
Roscommon div 1 beaten by div 3 clare
leading to galway div 2 as Connacht champions
tyrone div 2 as ulster champions
now its quite possible that Dublin are in the premier league
rest of div 1 apart from Kerry mayo n donegal are pretty average to poor

There's some truth in what you say.

I remember at the start of the year people saying the hurling was the most open it was in years.

Talk of Clare, Limerick, Waterford all being contenders off the back of the league.

Kilkenny were barely favourites with the bookies. People reading way too much into league form.

In football then outside the top 4/5 teams there's very little to chose from the next 10-15 teams. I think league is something of an indicator, but there's also a large amount of luck involved when teams are playing 7 coin flip matches.

In division 1 Dublin were way ahead of the pack and Down clearly weren't good enough, other than that there was nothing to choose between anyone. Similar stories in division 2 or 3. Tyrone and Kildare clearly too good for their division and Limerick not up to division 3. The rest could've gone anyway.

Defensive teams seemed to outperform their championship run this season. Could be that some styles are better suited to the bad weather.

Apart from 3/4 teams at the top and 5/6 teams at the bottom there's very little between the standard of the rest of the teams.

both played in div 3 so you are being disingenious. people seem to use either last season's div or next season's to validate their point.

of course the better teams are in the top divisions. i don't know how anyone can argue with that. the championship is a one-off game and as such the best team on the day wins. that can be down to numerous factors.
having said that Roscommon were really dissappointing in the championship (2 matches v Galway and yesterday vClare).

they have played 6 matches and are out.
