Release county squad players back to clubs?

(Oldest Posts First)

Should Club players who are in the wider County Panel at Minor, U21 or Senior level, be automatically released back to their clubs for weekend games if they are outside of the 23 man match day panel?

As it stands, many players are getting to play no competitive football if they are in a County panel, but not making the actual match day panel. How are these players expected to improve or sharpen their skills if they aren't getting proper game time.

Should the GAA consider making this a compulsory rule?

Is a match day squad 26 not 23?
Yes they should be released for club activity and it should be compulsory but it wont ever happen

I thought it was now a compulsory rule now? If they aren't in the matchday squad name on a thursday they are free to play football with their clubs.

I know in Mayo that players on the county panel who aren't playing much, or not at all, will line out for their clubs in league games. The day after Galway beat Mayo this year, Alan Freeman and Diarmuid O'Connor both played for their clubs despite making sub appearances against Galway.

Another story about it, this time from Donegal.

Of course every president of the GAA states that his aim is to protect the clubs and the club players. They never do anything.

The Offaly football championships, all grades started this week. We played last league game on 3rd April, championship 15th May, and 12th June. Qualifiers 26th June and 9th July.
How does a 3 month lay off benefit the club players? With a 4-6 weekbreak between games, players should have been allowed play with their clubs between fixtures.
We won't be contesting provincial or national finals for some time.
