Ever since Donegal's achievements in 2012 the entire football world has gone into overdrive in it's attempts to ultimately attempt to cull the modern day tactics of the Blanket Defense. But my argument - is the football of today more inclusive and welcoming to all who wish to play?
"Traditional Football" might be what we wish to see more of but forgetting the entertainment factor for a moment (Which in all honesty is the basis of the anti-modern football argument) the traditional game which see's 15 men look after their own area ensures there is 50-50 contests between players where only the best footballer thrives.
However if you take the modern day game where the the idea is simple - defend as one and attack as one, it is so much more inclusive to all. The skills of the game are diluted and it allows anybody to participate and compete if they put their mind to it. In short the skillset and criteria required to play football today as oppose to years ago is completely changed and makes top level competition much more attainable for players. Surely as the GAA tries to compete with other sports this is only a good thing?
It angers me to see threads and articles stating we need rule changes to restrict teams playing football in this manner. The issue is here is one thing - Entertainment. Players, believe it or not play to win and be successful. Not to entertain the masses. Modern day football works, its inclusive of all and allows those we master it to compete where they may not have been capable of before. Donegal and Galway are perfect examples. Dublin even, how many years did we lambaste Dublin for failing to reach their potential, it is no coincidence that when they began to adopt pieces of the modern game they elevated themselves to a new level.
Modern football has helped the noncompetitive be competitive, the weak be strong and the top table of football grow. Good luck to those who wish to kill it.
