Things in the GAA that make you Cringe

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Can be light-hearted or Serious, Doesn't matter :)

For me, Has to be the use of players nicknames in commentary. Absolute cringe-central

"The Star" Donaghy.... "Gooch" Cooper...... "Babs" Keating.... "Bubbles" O'Dwyer.. "Brick" Walsh

Rotten.

Others include the use of certain phrases like "That's right over the black shpot", Or Mike Finnertys favourite on SS after a guy gets a score... "He got what he came for"

Totally agree with the nicknames thing. I would imagine that nearly every player has a nickname but the media only seem to know the big players from big teams.
Marty Morrissey makes me cringe. I have to switch over if I see him.
Also, some peoples obsession with getting people from other countries to like hurling and football. You could see that when Sky started their coverage last year.

The minute silence before every single game makes me feel ill aswell actually.

Can we add that one to the list ?

"Please stand for a minutes silence as a mark of respect to little Brucey, Mary O'Reilly's pet jack Russell, Who was run over by a John Deer tractor whilst Paddy O'Neill was out wrappin hay bales.....hey!!"

Marty Morrisey, RTE coverage and the unholy trio of brolly/spillane and O'Rourke, and anti Ulster bias in general, Kerry's arrogance,
pundits saying 'he's the best' forward/defender in the country.
it goes on every week, if you followed that logic you'd have a team of 50 best forward/defenders in the country.

Wayno what is wrong with a minutes silence? The GAA is a community. I know you don't really get that same fabric in urban area's but in rural Ireland, the local GAA club is the centre of the world from actual games, local festival, a guard of honor at a funeral, the whole community looking out for each other. When a member the GAA members are there, preparing food, helping with parking etc.

The minute's silence is a mark of respect which clearly you have not shown by that post which seems to take a swipe at rural Ireland which your tractor jipe.

Ah Jaysus no - not little Brucey. That wee dog loved life and especially the Sunday Game - when it heard the theme coming on of a Sunday afternoon he used to go buck mad running round in front of the telly and only sat at peace when Marty came on screen. Sure didn't Joe Brolly try and imitate him every week getting on like a rabid dog. He will be missed for sure. Definitely deserving of the minute silence.

Don't worry, it's not restricted to you, YT. He doesn't like anyone from the diaspora either, particularly if they dare to pull on the green shirt. If you sound like he does, live where he does and think like he does, you're alright. A perfectly well rounded, objective individual with a sense of perspective, hey?

The purring over Kerry players from the likes of Carney and handsome Marty. The use of the 'Debut' by Marty. The talk of terrible Ulster football yet this year the four semi games (replays included) and final will prob be best games on view this year.

marty morrissey constantly looking at his notes and saying the club that is a player is from during the course of the commentary as if he actually knew anything about the player. umpires being slow to raise the white flag, Joe Brolly. people especially tomas O' Se say "look" before every sentence. Des cahil's facial expression just before the camera leaves him.

Dreadful pundits on the TV and radio. Tommy Carr probably the worst of all time. Local singers murdering the anthem before every game. Can we not just play the music for gods sake? And defenders celebrating a free as if they won the Lotto. Galway really embraced that yesterday in the first half.

Martin Kearney, Cyril Farrell, Ger Loughnane particularly when they're trying to look in touch with the modern game.
Commentators praising a run of the mill goal as superb finishing.
Praising goalkeepers for wonderful saves when the balls been hit straight at them.
"That's how you beat the blanket defence"

That's a new one. Never heard of someone doing that before. I know that many of us would like to see certain teams winning after our own team has exited the championship.

the cringiest thing for me (and it applies to a lot of sports) is when a team loses the game to a last minute howler from the officials but rather than say it like it is, the analysts focus on how that team "should have been out of sight already". Bulls**t! They were in a winning position and would have won (albeit narrowly) if the officials had done their job.

Generally have found the singers to be ok. It's when a 50 year old record of the National anthem with static is played that makes me cringe. Additionally when the sound system during announcements at County Grounds (some, not all ) sounds like an alien trying to send a garbled message to earth from a far planet.

When players/managers say 'we will win it for -' naming a player who is absent through injury or suspension. What they are saying implies that they are cheating at all other times by not giving 100%,
