Leinster Inter County GAA in a coma

Both football and hurling championships are officially dead. Here we had a Leinster hurling final. Killkenny win it AGAIN. Nobody of the small crowd of 29,300 cared. Not even those from Killkenny. Why do we even bother with this championship, when the same team wins it almost all the time and don't even celebrate it.

Actually very similar to the munster football championship nowadays. But at least they still have a good hurling one. So back to Leinster. The hurling is terrible. But now the football is too. The cup should just be handed to Dublin. Atmosphere at matches non existent. It's embarrassing to watch. These are our national games and I'd honestly rather watch paint dry.

Not much will be done though. The gaa seem to enjoy fading into obscurity on the Irish sporting scene. While rugby and soccer offer something to actually care about.

If i was them Dublin would be rotated every year to a different province only walking leinster every 4 years.

For the hurling I'd entitle Galway to home games and I'd allow leinster finals take place in Galway, Wexford and Killkenny. Stadiums around 28-30k which would be full and at least the likes of Galway might have a better chance of winning if it was there.

Only brightside now. Don't have to worry about the hurling destroyers known as Killkenny for 5 weeks. Hopefully be a few decent games before someone ambushes Killkenny in the semi. One can hope at least.

Allow Galway home games in Leinster - Absolutely it's a disgrace that isn't the case already

Move Leinster Finals to provincial venues - Again absolutely Croker is over used as it is and the limp atmospheres only increases the misery, unless you have a 60k crowd expected Croker is dead

Move Dublin about - No way, too simplistic, the inadequacies of funding infrastructures and games development must be tackled, moving the problem does not solve it.

Kilkenny, hurling destroyers - I don't know where your going with that, the dedication to the sport in the land of cats is unsurpassed, they love hurling and for long stages today were given their bellyful of it and will be again but ambushing Kilkenny in a semi final won't help Wexford, Offaly, Laois or Dublin with all their resources or help Cork or Limerick or Antrim, it will just beat them in one game they will still come back and win again

Was Jack at the Leinster Final yesterday? Good game. Cats pounced after h-t. Richie Hogans a half decent sub! Galway were good. KK are just the best team about. End of.

Ban Dublin from the football championship. Give Meath the Royal Crown they deserve!!!

Leinster football gets a right rollicking for being a one horse race....but yet again Hurling gets a free pass as everyone is in awe of Kilkenny. Now Kilkenny are a fantastic team but I hate watching most of their games as you know the result already. They have made the Leinster Hurling championship redundant and have also cleaned up nationally. Some team but if Kerry or Dublin were that dominant I think the discussion would be very different.

Definitely, for two counties that are normally very well supported in hurling it was a disappointing turn out considering the washout of 2012 was only about 7,000 less than yesterday.

Clare and Waterford both met in the national league final and there Munster clash only attracted 19thousand.
tipp and limerick In thurles had just 25 thousand so 29 thousand for Kilkenny and Galway is hardly a poor crowd.

All poor enough.

Clare and Waterford play an unattractive brand of hurling - hence the small crowd.

The other 2. . .I would probably put it down to Tipp and KK being overwhelming favourites for each game.

In saying that, attendances aren't a patch on what they were 15-20 years ago. Has the back door put an end to the sell-out crowds at earlier championship games?

I would have considered myself a big fan of the back door system since its inception right up to this year, but I'm starting to think it may have had its day - in both football and hurling. (although I would still like to see the old hurling back door retained where a Leinster and Munster losing finalist gets back in - hard to do this with Galway and Antrim, at times, playing in Leinster)

Kilkenny were met with a real challenge yesterday and had to play up to their best to win, where as Dublin haven't had to get out of 3rd gear in the last 4/5 years.
On crowds at games, were they really all that bigger 20 years ago?

Posters Hill is actually correct. 29k for a pretty much pre determined result is not as bad as ye think. As mentioned by another poster attendances in general are down from the brilliant nineties (both hurling and football) but is camouflaged by the fact there are more games than 20 yrs ago. Also if this final was in a provincial venue like Tullamore, Salthill or Nowlan Park the atmosphere would have been ten times better. Time to take the Leinster hurling final out of Croker (Dublin excepted if a home away arrangement is in place). Bottom line we were spoilt in the nineties with the best GAA decade ever given all the provincial and all-Ireland breakthroughs. Sure the Seventies was a disaster by and large. How fans lived through this particularly in hurling. You can be sure there will be a top notch atmosphere in Salthill next Sunday and Clones for the respective Connacht and Ulster football finals but the crowd in both cases will be around 30k which is similar to yesterday. it will be interesting to see if the Munster Hurling final gets anywhere near its 49,866 capacity.

Well I don't see jack on ripping into munster final yesterday
There was 26 thousand only at it
Yet complained about 29 thousand being small for the Leinster final

Personally I don't get too interested in the championship any more until the free lives are used up. I'd prefer to go league matches where there is generally something on the line than early rounds of provincials.

Calling Kilkenny 'hurling destroyers' means you are missing the point completely. I just wish every other team would play like them, Then we would have fantastic hurling matches week in week out.
