Once this season concludes, so does the existing TV contract, and the number of interested parties will only increase. RTE will presumably retain its current rights, but who will be the second broadcaster? Such was the controversy over the Sky deal that it is unlikely to be renewed, so TV3 appear to be in pole position (too expensive for TG4 and UTV Ireland have no sporting experience yet). The only potential upset would come from a Setanta/BT approach, but while Setanta Ireland is included in Virgin and Eir basic packages, FTA channels are likely to be prioritised. anciarraioch82 (Kerry) - Posts: 33 - 02/07/2016 15:54:44 1875039 Link 0 |
Would TV3 even be interested? They have acquired the rights to 6 Nations for a sizeable sum so may not have the resources. jimski (Kildare) - Posts: 381 - 02/07/2016 16:47:48 1875054 Link 0 |
Some other TV station should look for the replays and some of the more important qualifiers. This evenings match between monaghan and Donegal was a real cracker and couldn't be seen on TV. Disgraceful,

Agree with you - possibly best games of championship so far are the 2 Ulster replays - none of which are on TV - total disgrace!!!

best way to compete with other sports for affilliating young kids. Don't show the best matches on D'telly mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1042 - 02/07/2016 22:30:48 1875186 Link 0 |
I think I read somewhere that tv3 was taken over......maybe by the owners off Eurosport? Think they have plenty of money hence they are getting loads of sporting right ie six nations. Can anyone confirm this? Sky deal hasn't worked.....poor viewing figures and not accessible too a lot of people. I would prefer tv3 to get the rights to be honest The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2087 - 02/07/2016 23:13:04 1875200 Link 0 |
Sky deal will continue, they going to increase offer as it has been a financial success, increased subscription for summer months or non cancellations due to end of soccer, and gaa are delighted with them, no change. royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 03/07/2016 00:08:57 1875220 Link 0 |
Pretty unusual to have 2 Ulster semi-final replays in one season. No TV deal can be set up on the basis of potential replays. They are the gravy. jimski (Kildare) - Posts: 381 - 03/07/2016 01:08:55 1875238 Link 0 |
Any reports I've seen have stated poor viewership figures so can't see Sky increasing coverage.

Given the state of RTE's commentary teams it really is time for a change. I don't care who gets it as long as their commentators are up to scratch Marty is way past his sell by date. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4892 - 03/07/2016 17:10:05 1875476 Link 1 |
But growing , also, its not viewership its subscriptions, so even if you don't view that many games, the fact that you didn't cancel your sky sports subscription at end of premier league then its money for sky, also if like me you upgrade to sky for summer months then its extra revenue, even though I only watched a couple of games, add to that the ex pats who watch it and its a all round winner, anything I heard is that rather than dropping sky will give more money for more games.

After the absolute bore fest of a championship we've had this year with the same old Killkenny, kerry and Dublin wining I'm surprised there will be such interest in the games. I feel bad for sky paying for their package and then having to entertain with a dead product. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 03/07/2016 17:55:29 1875512 Link 0 |
Not going to happen RTE seem to have same commentators now for 20 years. Marty even has his own radio show after the matches.

A bit of rubbish being thrown in here! To suggest that 'it's a disgrace' not to show matches (and replays at that) on tv is downright funny. Armchair viewers get a huge variety of games to see even if the Sky games are left out of the mix. At some point, a balance has to be struck between televising matches and protecting attendances. I not sure where that balance lies exactly, but I know that every weekend I can watch matches, plural, from my sofa without having to pay a subscription...that's fair in my eyes. 1914 (Clare) - Posts: 92 - 03/07/2016 18:00:15 1875518 Link 1 |
Viewing figures awful for sky real pity so few people seen 4 of the best matches this year donegal vs monaghan twice, mayo vs galway and tipp/cork. Virgin media bought tv3

Surely this year football has been more interesting then the last few years tipp beating cork, mayo losing, Ulster been more competive.

I couldn't get to the game so I listened to it on the radio, found it really enjoyable, far better commentary than the rubbish you get on tv, sick listening to the anti Ulster/Donegal bias on RTE at this stage. TirChonaillabu2 (Donegal) - Posts: 344 - 03/07/2016 23:35:39 1875749 Link 0 |
