Should there be a handicap system in the GAA

(Oldest Posts First)

Where there is a gulf between teams should there be a handicap system.

For example

Dublin v Westmeath in football.

London v Mayo in football

Dublin v Kilkenny in hurling

It would make the championship far more interesting.

The teams ranking for the handicap could be seeded by thier number of wins/loses/draws in the past three years in league and championship.

Yeah, any time GAA county teams play each other at golf a handicap system should apply based on each player's ability to play golf.

After the money invested into Dublin hurling and the presumption that they were also going to be winning titles at senior level that is some insult! Oh and the answer is no by the way!

You would really see how much of a juggernaut Dublin are if there was a handicap system in place.

If they started 10-12 points behind, they would go full blast from the start rather than cruise along in 2nd gear like they do most games because they know they are superior and content to only win by 10 points.

It would be a sight to see them in top gear for 70 minutes in every game.

2lbs of lead in each of the Dubs boots
Sounds like a good idea to me .
Great team , great players ! They know something the other teams are not aware of.

Would it not just be much more simple to catagorise Inter-county teams as either Senior, Inter or Junior levels? Just gander at the Ladies Football and Camogie works there with some Senior counties competing at two levels. I mean some counties are never going to be able to compete.

'Handicap' could take many forms.

With the GPA 8x4 Champs League idea - I have proposed putting a pair of Div 1 teams in 4 groups with a pair of Div 4 teams in the others.
That alone is a form of 'handicapping' - unfair you could say to the strong teams - but possibly to the betterment of the tournament.

The GAA seems to be against a league format for the championship for some strange reason.

It is the most common sense idea.

Your thinking narrowly wayno.

The GAA is not like the likes of soccer where a poorer team on paper can grind out a result. Although Donegal nearly succeed, the most teams can do is keep the score down and avoid a hiding.

The next question you need to ask yourself Wayno is:
what do I think of the championship structure?
Was your answer "a joke".

The next question you have to ask yourself do you honeslty enjoy one sided Dublin football games from the team you support?

The final question is would you watch one sided games as a neutral?

A handicap system would solve all these problems at a stroke and breathe new life into a dying championship system.

Or should we just go asleep until August?
