Question for Antrim and Fermanagh

(Oldest Posts First)

Reading an article on here that is suggesting the GAA look at changing the upcoming fixtures that Antrim and Fermanagh are involved in due to the norn iron game.

"Given Northern Ireland's strong ties with both northern counties involved and the precendent that has been set by Leinster Council in switching the throw-in times for Sunday's Leinster SFC semi-finals due to a clash with the Republic of Ireland's meeting with France, one could be forgiven for asking should the GAA consider further time changes this weekend."

I come from a city that would have 90% plus republic supporters. Do GAA fans in these counties follow norn iron? Seems like sloppy reporting to me.

( oh and it's precedent not precendent hoganstand )

I can't think of one person from my club who'd be a N Ireland fan. I doubt there are many in any club in N Antrim, as for West Belfast, not a chance.

I went to school with a fair few people who would be Catholic born but would be unionist or would consider themselves as N Irish rather than being Irish. I don't recall any of them being remotely involved in GAA.

Honestly don't know any NI supporter up around the Glens - not saying there aren't any but just that I have yet to meet them. The only 'strong link' I can make is that Michael O'Neill is of good GAA stock (both in his genes and through representing Antrim) and he went to the same school as myself (post primary). No, if it came down to a choice for me in watching Norn Iron on telly on Saturday and Antrim/Meath in the Christy Ring (if it is even being televised) then it would be Antrim/Meath - would just have to decide then if I wore my Antrim top or my Wales one.

Personally I would like to see the Northern Ireland game - I would like to be watching when all their illusions are shattered and they are sent packing. But move the Antrim game so as I can see it - no my enjoyment of watching NI beat still does not mean that much to me..

I thought as much. Just another example of a lazy author not doing their research

I find that most of my friends who are Gaelic Football fans tend to follow soccer more so than my hurling mates. I would like to see Northern Ireland do well, as a lot of my colleagues and protestant friends are big fans of the Northern Ireland team. We can't remain bigoted all our lives can we????

I have plenty of experience of being in the vicinity of the NI fans and I find their chants, slogans etc less than inclusive. Meanwhile I am being fed the line that we are all in it together - if not supporting them makes me a bigot then I am a bigot.

Really ? In no way are they inclusive , they know it and couldn't care less. Seriously bigoted set of fans . God Save the Queen ? ? Union Jacks ?? Hope they get tanked but think they might actually beat the welsh .. But I'll never think fair play to them

Why don't you ask the droves of NI fans who do 'the bouncy' about bigotry? I would have more interest in watching a South Antrim reserve game than that crowd so changing the game time would mean nothing to me personally and that is not me trying to insult, it's just how I feel after living in Belfast all my life and knowing how unwelcoming Tate's Avenue and the areas surrounding Windsor are to people from any other background than Unionist.

Maybe someone else can confirm but I think I read Conor McLaughlin's family come from a GAA background?? And I think Michael McGovern as well. I suppose any GAA fans with a direct connection to these two players might follow Northern Ireland.. Maybe not??

Yeah McGovern played as did Niall Maginn. As did O'Neill and maybe even others. Still not enough though to make me get a semi for the team.
