WTF is the craic with Cork GAA, and in particular, Cork Football.
Historically Cork are the 4th or 5th most successful team in Ireland. Huge GAA playing population (more GAA clubs than Dublin), Huge talent pool. How has it come to this. As a Dubs supporter, but primarily as a football fan, its saddens me to see Cork in the state they are. Now I am delighted for Tipp. as I am to see Clare coming in football. And long may it continue. But, not I hope at the expense of Cork football.
From an outsiders POV, we have a county board there who seem to be more concerned with building a state of the art new stadium than investing in their teams. I see now at least one member of the CB coming out and saying as much, which is refreshing. Cork cant bury their head in the sand and wait for this to sort itself by some sort of natural progression.
There is no point in having the tradition and the history if you then betray that very tradition and that very history in the name of "progress" that in itself leaves your very county teams which laid that tradition, behind.
Football needs a strong Cork.
How far are we now from the AI Semi Final of 1983 down the Pairc. Its not a problem that cant be fixed, but its a problem that must be fixed.

Exactly this time 5 years ago, we were current league and AI champions. We had a brilliant under 21 team who had hammered Kerry in Munster. Colm O'Neill was on his way back from injury. Things were not as bright for Cork football since the mid 80s (when we had a 3 in row under 21 winning team). In short, we were in prime position to win a few All-Irelands and be team of the decade.
Look what has happened though? We are a laughing stock now. It's fairly hard to take actually. The county board, by their actions, seem to have much bigger priorities than intercounty football teams. Cork GAA supporters (those involved with clubs) don't travel to follow the team. I was at a junior B club game in the pissing rain on Saturday with probably as many at it as travelled to Thurles (not far off anyway).
When Brian Cuthbert took over, I thought with a talented bunch of players and a new lease of life, we would rattle the AI. Now I jsut wish we'd pull out of it. There is no point putting in half-hearted efforts. Everyone is to blame but it definitely comes from the top.

You've spun this aul yarn before Liamo.I have no great love for Cork.Certainly no sympathy.A lot of their hurling problems are self inflicted, with the last poisonous strike still being felt to this day.
In overall terms,Cork are the most successfull county, winning more All Irelands in both codes, and all groups, than any other. So forgive me for laughing but when i feel a little sympathy and empathy for some counties plight,it is certainly not Cork. What about Carlow,Wicklow,Leitrim etc?Be careful what you wish for.Cork are going through a wee lull.No more.No less. When they get their house in order,we are all in trouble. They will start churning out All Ireland's at an impressive rate.I have little doubt of that. They are too big,too successful, too arrogant(in a good way) and too shrewd not to.Before too long, bennybunny will be back in love with intercounty GAA and hurlingspuds and blackrock eddie will be cheering their team home to Kent railway station.

Only Cork can fix this problem.
Darragh's article today hit quiet a few nails with the old hammer:
Regardless of the Frank Murphy's dictatorship, the dual clubs situation, the vanity project going up on the Lee, or cribbing about adequate coaching, the players out on Sunday have a huge pedigree at under age and Cork has more footballers to choose from than almost any other county.
Getting tanked by a poor Kildare side last year.
Being over turned by another Division 3 side on Sunday, and well beaten for most of the game bar a late surge.
A lot of these lads need to have a good long look at themselves.
Then again it couldn't happen to a nicer county :D

The strikes put them back 20 years. But youd probably have some who still think letting the players pick the manager is a good idea

Ive banged this drum cue cos I mean it I have a soft spot for the Cork footballers, and its not good to see them in the state they are now I always lamented that fact football wasnt stronger in Cork. Can you imagine if Football had the following hurling has in Cork, and then if we were 1 and 2 in the country? There is a very natural rivalry between the 2 cities/counties that transcends any sport. First city v second city, Look at the LOI Clubs and how cutting it can get. I would love to see more days between Cork and Dublin like 83, but sadly, it seems a long way off. In hearts and minds.

Why does football need a strong Cork ? Id say Cork needs a strong Cork the fans, the sponsors ,they need a strong Cork , I'm not going to put the boot in on Cork their fans know what's going on better than any Dub, the reaction to Corks defeat on media has dwarfed the good will to Tipp football which is a shame. Cork squad aged together and unfortunately like a lot of counties it requires that word transition , before anything else happens they need a style that they are comfortable with and be prepared to give every effort on the pitch, neither it seems are happening right now

If Cork had gotten their act together a few years back and given Cleary the job when he was ready willing and able, they wouldnt be in the mess they are now. Of course luck has played its part. Ciaran Sheehan, Colm O'Neill etc but when you see very talented footballers like Aidan Walsh off to play a game he is mediocre at best (and he has said football is his preferred game) youd have to wonder why thats happening...... I am not on the ground in Cork so I dont know how to solve it, but part of the problem is very very evident for anyone with a passing interest to see. There is a certain character in Cork GAA running the show like a north korean dictator and if you dont play his game, your out. No way to run a CB. The recent rumblings on twitter from a few lesser CB voices does however point to maybe, finally a crossroads being reached?

Sorry Liamo, but dont get the love-in with Cork. When i was a young lad i spent many summers and New Years visiting my Cork first cousins in Cobh.Believe me,these buckos had no love of Dublin. And me having strong Tipperary connections hasn't helped.I don't think Cork and Dublin really like each other at all.Its the big city/county rivalry.I respect Cork, like i do all counties, but i must admit, they are my least favourite county and i never support them as a neutral ; doesn't matter who they are playing.I'm sure the feeling is mutual.A lot of it is just banter but that's the way i feel.

Cue, i am well aware of the feelings towards Dublin in Cork but I think, having spent most of my life in Limerick that i am kinda above that if u get me. But the thing is, that feeling exists nation wide. Like, I holiday in Kerry every year. I love Kerry, I love Kerry people, My family are half Kerry FFS I have no family in Cork, i have no ties to the place atall. But, for some reason, I have a gra for their football teams and always shout for Cork V Kerry.
I dunno why, just do!

My wife is from West Cork and her family are real Cork football people.
I'd go down fairly regularly to both the city and the West and from what I've heard there's different things wrong with football and hurling.
In hurling I think there's been a lack of work done plain and simple. There was an old adage that Cork were Cork and come with a team almost over night and win the All-Ireland because of their numbers and tradition. That was true once but I think the game has moved on so much that other counties are just much better prepared from earlier on and Cork have waited very long to make the right moves. I hear that they've really started to work at underage and have been quite successful of late so I'd imagine they'll be right back at the top table in a few years. Enjoy this while it lasts in my opinion as when they're on top they're insufferable! (As bad as the Dubs wha!)
In football it is very hard to tell what is going on. The raw talent is absolutely there in the county to win an All-Ireland. I don't think there actually that far away, obviously not this year but it wouldn't take much in my opinion to turn them into contenders.
