Give respect, Get Respect

(Oldest Posts First)

The poor stadium announcer in Thurles must have been hoarse from saying the word "respect"! Shaking hands is fine, but it's hardly a deal-breaker.

The elephant in the room is the respect, ir lack of it, that refs are given. If the GAA was serious about respect, they would introduce serious punishments for every player who disrespects the ref. Automatic yellows etc. Likewise for management and officials - we don't have to look too far for a prime example!

C McGrath was roundly booed when taking the free to level matters up and I was disappointed in the Waterford fans for doing so - that belongs in some other arena but not hurling where there is a genuine respect between counties.

My disgust was doubled where our own "fans" did the exact same to M Shanahan. If D Shanahan's allegations are true, then it's worse still. Give respect, get respect indeed!

I agree with this. It is sad and unfortunate that hurling is now going down the road that football has been on for a while. Referees take and get horrible abuse from supporters and players, it is not right. Plus the attitude of players on the pitch regarding win at all costs, has totally ruined the game. I did not renew my season ticket this year, because I have seen enough over the past 12 to 18 months to suggest that this year is going to be as bad if not worse than years gone by.

Plus, players that are involved in thuggery are going to be rewarded and decorated at the end of the year with all stars and the like. Totally wrong message. The media are as much to blame for this, but I suppose they have to write about the positives as well as the negatives. It still doesnt make it right though.

Get rid of the black card. Introduce the sin bin.
Heavy fines for county boards.
Automatic 14 metre free for dissent.

These 3 rules would smarten up the game big time and very quickly too.

Booing of players/officials is to be deplored. However respect has to be earned by players and refs.

Respect has to be earned by players and refs. What do you mean exactly?
The jeering yesterday was harmless enough I thought and mostly coming from kids. However Maurice Shannahans claim that abuse was coming from the clare bench is another more serious matter if true.

Zulu, jeering isn't acceptable no matter who does it! Why do children jeer (which you must admit is unsporting?)? Because they inherit their attitudes from adults.

Yawn. If you ask me the players love it and it adds to the atmosphere. Mayo fans loved booing Connolly last year they were all getting a great laugh out of it he was the baddie and they didn't care about his feelings. Poor Dermo

Yes sure 1914, but we dont live in a perfect word. If we did you wouldn't hear a word of bad language at any match. All things considered I thought it was harmless until I read about the Shannahans claim

I'm all for players/referees giving each other respect, but it has to start from club level, was involved in a club game last year where the referee was abusing players, what message does that send out?

Yeah, Brian Cody never ever, ever did anything like that (2006 vrs Galway.................)

Respect for referees is something of a nonsense when you see referees reports and stuff being overturned at a whim from some committee or other within the GAA, CCCC or the CCCCCCCCCCC.

Respect will come when the organisation itself supports the referees to the hilt.

Kieran Donaghy and Gouch are 2 players consistent for abusing referees and getting away with for years. Don't expect GAA to act now

look guys refs like players make mistakes and can have bad games , they are human and dont have replays, Would like to see more input from linesmen and upires (5 pairs of eyes better then one) but in general they mostly get it right and do a fine job, watched a soccer game few month back and they had a ref doing part of the analysis and he gave brilliant insight into what the ref did and why he made certain decisions,

might be worth looking at for sunady game

was at club rugby final at weekend - at the end when winning captain got the cup he thanked the ref and said I know at time we didnt make it easier for you !! but you did a great job , the ref got a laugh from that - nice touch i thought

I don't like seeing referees being booed BUT the GAA have failed to deal with the problem of poor refereeing and this is much of the cause of it.
Nothing was done in recent years especially since "Sluddengate".

The Ref's in rugby seem to comment aswell as ref the game. How often do you hear the Rugby Ref screaming advice (abuse?) at a player
"RED 8 Get back" Blue 9 leave him alone.
This is not a nice feature.

In a lot of games at club level and above that I experience fans will boo and shout when the opposition is taking frees. automatic yellows wont change anything.

When you say automatic 14 metre free for dissent what you mean? Any messing when a free has been awarded should mean moving the free up...

It isn't advice or abuse. A comment like get back red 8 blue 9 leave him alone is proactive refereeing. How is it not a nice feature?

No mayo fan loved booing anyone. Nor was there any laugh going on.
They were booing a complete flouting of the rules that the guy taking the field represented rather than the player himself. Otherwise they would be booing him every time they meet him rather than just the once.
