Westmeath make history

(Oldest Posts First)

Westmeath have made history by suffering relegation from division 1 to division 4 in consecutive years. Thats embarrassing. Is football in that county in such a bad state?

Makes it worse that Meath let a huge lead slip against them last season too..

Hope they feel a bit silly for the over celebrating last year. Played for 20 mins against a team vulnerable to second half collapses and that papered over a lot of cracks for them.

Why should they feel silly about celebrating an achievement that no other Westmeath team had ever achieved?!

By your logic the Meath players should feel silly for having celebrated winning the All-Ireland in 1999 because they got hammered in the 2001 Final.

1999 was not the problem it was over-celebrating the drubbing we gave Kerry in the 2001 semi-final.

Winning an All Ireland and winning a one off game against a mediocre team are comparable alright.

By your logic though it stands.

Westmeath had a great day last summer against Meath. They achieved something never done by a team from their county and they rightly enjoyed it. They hadn't managed to beat many of the other mediocre Meath teams they played in the Championship before then.

Perhaps more likely alright!

Ah now Royalbadger it was a historic first championship win against Meath especially when Westmeath came close to beaten the Royals in 2001 and 2003.

Westmeath also scored their highest ever total in a Championship game that day.
3-19 in case you forgot and in front of live TV
It was also Westmeath's first win in Croke Park since the Leinster final replay win against Laois in 2004
which Westmeath won fair and square.

Have to say I'm a bit taken aback at the way Westmeath have been relegated again. A few weeks ago just before the Tipp game, I commented on the WM forum that I thought there was more chance of MH being relegated than WM. Some of the posts on the WM (could add in Laois and a few others as well) forum are eerily similar to posts on the MH forum, manager, CB, underage neglect all getting the blame for state of county seniors. What any of this is got to do with the Leinster semi last year is beyond me. WM won that day and fair play to them, get over it. Heard some of Bernard Flynn's comments last weekend where he seemed to believe that the current players collectively and individually have a lot to answer for. He also meandered on about lack of underage development, not entirely sure if he actually had a point to make with WM in particular, as you could apply the same argument to most counties. League tables rarely lie these days, MH, WM and Laois are way off the pace and sliding.
