GAA players who became TDs

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With the election coming up - just out of curiosity I'm interested in knowing of any recent TD / Senators played inter county GAA at any level.

Here's a few - probably missing more

Jack Lynch, deenihan, dick spring, liam lawlor, john wilson, john omahoney, Brian cowen (offaly minor), peter fitzpatrick, martin ferris.

Sadly it's been known to happen. Decades of being hit with hurls, getting the faces dug off them, dirty cynical hits. A lot of players left with confusion, walking about in a daze, full of anger and frustration. There's only ONE place left for them.....Leinster House.

Henry Kenny won an All-Ireland with Mayo in 1936. Charles Haughey played for Parnells, was suspended for a year at one stage for whacking a linesman. Sean Kelly became an MEP.

Louth Manager Peter Fitzpatrick is a current FG TD. Shane Curran the former Roscommon goalkeeper is an FF election candidates this time around. Graham Geraghty and John O'Leary ran for the Dail but failed to be elected. Former Wexford hurling manager Dempsey was a TD. Also I'd fairly certain former Minister for Education and TD for Meath would have played inter county at some stage.

Liam Lawlor also represented Dublin and Leinster at hurling.

@ Wicklowman

Fitzer has not been Louth manager since 2012. Since then Aidan O Rouke (2013 and 2014) and now Colin Kelly is Louth manager.

Ollie, I meant he was a current TD not a current Louth manager

i see my messages aren't being posted - this is a political theme - my point Brian Cowen didn't play minor is relevant........ he did play 5 mins of an U-21 match . ( only game).
I got it from good authority from an ex-County Board Chairman that Cowen was put on the panel to further his 'father's' political career/ambitions....... i would say that other county managers were probably also put under pressure.........

H. Kenny, Denihan and Fitzpatrick, Lynch etc had a name in the GAA before their political career ... but some used the GAA only for their own needs.......

a well know ex- Leader of this country had no interest in the GAA as a youth and young man, was an avid man utd follower but then saw how beneficial it could be to be associated with his county team....

Michael Donnellan's father John and his grandfather Mick both were TDs (and all three won all-Irelands with Galway).

Jack McQuillan won two All Irelands for Roscommon in 1943/44 and was elected as a TD on 4 occasions between 1948 and 1957 essentially as a Socialist with Clann na Poblachta , a remarkable acheivement in a county not reknowned for its radicalism although we do have a penchant for renegades . McQuillan was an intriguing political character and was inextricably connected to Noel Browne.

Seamus Kirk the retiring Fianna Fáil TD played for Louth 1963 -1972. He suffered severe leg break in a league game v Down in Drogheda which ended his football career. He was chairman of the committee which developed the Louth GAA centre of excellence in Darver. A great GAA man.

Des Foley was a great dual player who with brother Lar won many honours in football and hurling with St. Vincent's ,Dublin and Leinster.
Seamus Mallon former Deputy First Minister in North played football for Armagh

What's the possibility of Seamus Quigley ever running for election? Now there would be some political figure.
