GAA HQ has to tackle player power with suspensions

(Oldest Posts First)

Tomsmith here

In talking to a very sensible GAA man (name withheld) the following questions were raised
No 1How many Counties have suffered from player power in recent times
No 2Where do the GPA stand on player power
No 3Where do Croke park stand on player power
No 4Where do the ordinary supporter stand on player power

His reply to No1 That 8 Counties suffered a player power surge in recent times some openly, and some very discreetly
His reply to No 2 It is not clear where the GPA stands on player power
His reply to No 3 Croke Park has stood back and let decent men's careers be torn asunder
His reply to No 4 Supporters are powerless to do anything unless we get organised and vote with the feet

What is the answer it

This idea that players should not make their feelings felt and just get on with it is not realistic. What if the management are genuinely not up to it? What if they are unfair on certain guys? What if they are more interested in playing guys from their own clubs? This term 'player power' and the connotations connected to it is quite unfair. The opinions of the players are a vital part of any player/management setup. At the end of the day, if an entire squad doesnt back the management, the problem isnt the squad, it's the management.

Does player power mean players looking for better conditions or just players unhappy with current management?
Counties often benefit (not 'suffer') from a change in management as in Offaly hurling 1998 and Donegal football 2010

I like powerful players, particularly if they are athletic and skillful with it. Yes I'd have to say I'm all in favour of player power.

What does it matter that players have looked for changes? What exactly is "player power" as its completely vague term.

Tom - There are a lot of 'sensible GAA men' who make little sense.
