Railway cup

Just seen the Munster Panels there for this weekends game. I have nothing against Kerry at all but they have some lads who who were not even on the Kerry senior panel this year yet have been selected for Munster. The likes of Waterford then only have one or two. Surely someone from the weaker teams should have more players on the squad rather than a player from the stronger county who wasnt even playing with his county in that years champ no??

No Dubs on the leinster panel or Donegal on the Ulster panel. Connacht have probably their weakest ever panel on paper for example two of the Mayo reps couldn't even get on their championship panel this year. The going away on holiday excuse when it was known at the start of the year that the railway cup would be played is December is laughable.

Playing the semi final on Saturday and then the final on Sunday is ridiculous does Mr P Duffy have anything to say about that?

The Railway Cup should be just allowed to die gracefully - just like this thread.

Nobody cares about it anymore.

You clearly do seeing as you're commenting on it

Nobody cares about the int rules either, but that doesn't stop the GAA supporting it heavily. I may be in the minority here, but I always go to the Railway Cup. It's great to see how people play together who would usually be on opposing sides and the football tends to be open and positive - teams want to win, but not to the extent that they park the bus. Also, I still define myself in part by my province, which I suppose is irrelevant for many people nowadays.

The Railway cup should be what the cursed International rules is, the premier exhibition game for the GAA. Instead of wasting money on a farce of a game with no relevance whatsoever, the GAA could put those funds into promoting and properly organising a good interpro series.

The very best of each province coming together in Croke park over a weekend, it should be the easiest game to market there is and yet the GAA dont bother at all, mainly because nobody gets a free jolly to Australia out of it. Four provinces, each with their superstars and their own histories, its a marketers dream yet totally wasted.

I'd far, far rather watch the interpros, not least because with 80+ players involved it also lets the best players from the weaker counties have a better shot at representation. But no, shove it on at the start of December and pay it lip service only. What a waste.

There is more interest in the International Rules then the Railway Cup lads. Maybe that is because of more promotion of it in comparison to the Railway Cup but I'm not so sure.

The Railway Cup was dying long before the International Rules came along.

No one is interested in it at all (attendance figures are usually only a few hundred) and the International Rules has gotten excellent crowds over the years.

If there are players willing to play then by all means keep it going but no one would miss it of it were scrapped.

From a personal point of view I don't care about Leinster. I don't self identify as a Leinsterman or whatever. It just isn't part of my make up in any way.

I agree mesamis, the only interest I have in Leinster is pulverising every other county within it's borders as an annual ritual :)

No suitable date for it really, not sure what the Gaa can do. It was played in Croke Park in 2013 before a few hundred and had been marketed that year.

The Railway Cups should be retired gracefully. Their hey day was back in the 50's up to the 60's, but with televised games, and more exposure to GAA games, they have been in decline.

I wish it was better than it was. I think its really only us Ulstermen that have any sort of provincial pride though and that's the reason it gets terrible turnouts, although being played in December doesn't help either.

Maybe the games should be given a weekend either after the All-Ireland semi-finals or final and be used to select the 'All-Stars' team.

It's the end of the year, players are burned out. Where is the incentive to play in this tournament?

I think the Railway Cup could be a tournament that the GAA uses to create a novelty event, eg why not play it in an indoor arena with slightly different rules, a bit like the Fenway park game?

A game toiling and slogging in the mud does nothing for anyone really.

Looking at all the panels i have to say that they are 4 poor panels, Ulster have more fermanagh than Donegal and Monaghan they are the best teams in Ulster and Fermanagh which is poor, but when ur manager is Pete Mcgrath!! Armagh have 2 players and its not even the 2 best players that Armagh have so shows you that they arent picking the best from each county!!

They are moving the club finals away from Paddy's day, they should play the Intepros then... But I heard that they are planning to play a Dublin league match instead... which for me is a waste of a good opportunity.

Youngfella I do believe Fermanagh reached the last 8 of the All Ireland series. Same as Monaghan and Donegal.

End the Railway Cup series. No public interest, playing them at the tailend of the year, especially given the horrendous weather, does nothing for promotion. Even playing them in summer, wil otaku any difference.
