Irish Forward Line!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Will be great to see Connolly, Brogan, McManus and O'Shea combining with each other against the Aussies! Worth the entry alone!

Agreed.

The ball wont get to the forwards. All kick outs have to pass the 45m line which means lots of high fielding. We haven't selected any of the top 10 fielders in the country bar Aiden O shea and maybe Colm Begley.

It will be a massacre.

Bit of a joke only having 1 kerryman and 2 mayomen when the whole country agrees Dublin, Mayo and Kerry are the top teams in the country. Kildare and Laois have each and they aren't even top 12 teams. Team seems to be full of runners when the game needs free takers (marks from the hand) and fielders to get scores.

tirawleybaron - Many players don't make or can't make themselves available. The series is dead in my opinion. I have little interest in it and anyone I talk to doesen't either.

Yeah bit of a joke alright that we have the same number of players on it as Cork despite hammering them earlier in the year...

I think the series is dying too, you want to see the best players in Ireland out representing Ireland.

Realistically how many of the squad announced are actually among the 35 - 40 players in the country?

Inter-county players choosing to play with their clubs above being considered for collection tells you all you need to know.

It seems we are going in opposite directions:

Australia is straying to send over their very best after years of sending out token teams.

Ireland is sending out less and less All Star sides, after years of having the very best players playing.

Just because you have a all star does not mean your the best player in ireland teams who get to semi finals usually pick these up look at glynn and coulter they have been outstanding for ireland over the years, players who our still in club championship can't really play, hughes is picked but if his club win on sun then that rules him out as he will be playing in ulster final.

There's no doubt about it - The Aussies are def taking this a lot more seriously

I'd be surprised if Ireland win.. but hopefully the team selected can blend well

Not true, if club commitments ruled out players then the likes of him and Donnelly would've been left out. Sure last year when Clontibret played Slaughtneil, McManus and McKaigue flew out to Australia later than the rest of the panel, and McKaigue still had an Ulster final ahead of him.

I don't think the fixtures clash this year(correct me if I'm wrong), so seeing as this test is in Dublin it shouldn't make much difference.

I detest this farce of a series, but can still see the huge error in the thinking of the OP.

He seems to believe that if a player if from Mayo or Kerry they will automatically be better than anybody from the "weaker" counties, when that simply is not a given. There are players from weaker counties that would walk onto any Kerry or Mayo team, but because they aren't surrounded by better players they don't get to grace All Ireland finals too often. That doesn't make them any less of a player, and doesn't mean they aren't good enough to deserve an International Rules spot ahead of average medal winning players from the successful counties.

Gary Brennan, John O'Loughlin and maybe Gearoid McKiernan would easily make the top 10 fielders in the country.

The backs look poor. No Neil McGee, no Chrissy McKaigue, no Kevin McKernan, no Colm Boyle or Finian Hanley. They all played last year.

Darren Hughes, Paul Cribbin and Mattie Donnelly are brilliant ball carriers and passers. I hope Kieran Hughes gets a run at this he is a joy to watch.

Gary Brennan is probably one of the best midfielders in the country and possibly fielder. His inclusion in the team and exposure he will finally get is one of the key arguments in keeping the series alive. If you go by the rationale of only choosing those from the top counties its a bit like saying you would only pick your county team from the top 4 or 5 clubs? Historically some of the great International rules players have come from so called weaker counties.

Puerly from a selfish POV i would way rather DC wasnt involved
I would fear the Aussies will have learned from the Mayos and Donegals of this world and will go out to pull his strings and given any chance, hurt him.
He is too good for this rubbish

Sure that's why Gooch stopped being involved a number of years ago.

I remember him saying on Radio Kerry that he was getting marked out by the Aussies for 'special' punishment and he didn't see the point in playing a sport where fella's of his stature will only geting targeted for injury.

Mind you that was a bit before the GAA/AFL sanitised the thing.

Will be going just to see that forward line, some operators.

Connolly will be able to look after himself especially with likes of Oshea behind him

The Gooch is a truly magnificent player but perhaps wont go down as one of the greats as he doesn't seem to survive a good, tough "on the edge" man marker like the ones he faced against Tyrone, Donegal and Dublin over the past number of years.....cue huge abuse from Kerry folk....

Now that could be worth the entry fee alone, Aussies will love him, maybe throw in Dessie as well. When is it on again
