Biting allegations

This subject raises it's ugly head again. Antrim side Cargin have alleged that one of their players, Michael McCann, was bitten by a Crossmaglen player in their Ulster Club Championship game on Sunday. Cargin say their player has the marks to prove it while the Cross co-manager Oisin McConville has denied it. Now the point is this, why would a player or club make these allegations if there wasn't substance to them? Do other clubs just go into complete denial mode when they are the ones accused? It is a horrible regularity creeping into Gaelic football and should carry the strongest punishment possible, a minimum 6 month ban.

Looking at the reaction

Seemingly it's only national news when a Dub player is accused of it

Where's the demonization of the Ulster player all of a sudden...??

;)

First off, turn off the cap lock, we can hear you.

As for the act of biting, a nasty act, it definitely deserves a strong ban.

But to be honest, Id say gouging someone's eye is far more dangerous, and the gaa only hand out a one match ban for that.

I heard that the secret to Crossmaglens success over the years is to starve their players for the week leading up to Championship games and keep them in a box and poke them with sticks. Just seems that one was starved a wee bit too much this time though coming to think of it Mick has a beautiful shoulder alright which must have looked appealing in the afternoon glow beneath an Armagh sky. Who says Ulster competition hasn't got a bit of bite to it!!

Jimbo, you are right and this thread proves I am not anti-Dublin. This is an accusation against a player who comes from Armagh and Ulster so this disproves the point I never highlight indiscretions within my own province. Master, you really are a sour oul scrote at times lol but you are also right. Eye gouging is worse so we probably can look forward to Bitegate Number 4 or is it 5? being glossed over.

Players get choked around the neck from behind and chomp down to be released.

It happens a lot more then is reported I think.

Master who was writing in capitals???

Has anyone saw the bite mark? I still maintain innocent until proven guilty. Until there is evidence we can't take the word of McCann or Brennan, it sets a dangerous precedent. However if a player is found guilty throw the book at him.

BTW Jimbo before you go off on one this is what i was saying in the Dublin bitegates.

I do not agree innocent until proven guilty- if the guy did bite he is guilty whether it is proven or not. There are lots of unmanly behaviour going on (and always has been) which should be dealt with by managers. A lot of these incidents are difficult to prove. Maybe the guy who did the biting was raised with wild dogs!!

If McCann has the marks to prove it then why doesn't he put up or shut up, publish the photograph and name the player.
He alleges this happened during the match, so you would have to question why the marks were not shown to the referee at the time, it would have been easy to identify the player and take action. Now the point is this, why would a player or club make these allegations and then not identify the player and provide the evidence?

As for the game, Cargin are a 2nd rate team who were brushed aside by a young cross team in transition, at least st galls manned up and showed a bit of pride for antrim.

I agree Tom if you make the allegations you have to follow it up and produce the evidence. However you seem to berate Cargin for having the audacity to make the allegations. That is wrong, they are NOT a second rate team and they matched Cross physically and skill wise for most of the match, inexperience at that level went against them.

browncows are you for real? whats to stop me saying that you bit me even though you didnt? proof is a basic requirement for conviction.

Tom the Superchuck I think you'll find McCann did not raise the bite issue, his manager John Brennan did.

Given that Cross denied it so quickly he was put in a position where he had to either back his manager or back Cross, so he was caught in the crossfire (pun intended).

He has since said he is not naming names so id imagine he is looking to forget about it.

A bite can be quite painful (and shocking) without leaving a noticeable mark so he probably has nothing to show, but that doesnt mean it didnt happen.

Anyway even if it had been caught on camera they could argue that there was no intent, it was a complete accident and what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch. Worked for Philly McMahon.
