What town (or village, parish) has the most GAA clubs? I've excluded cities because they can't really count. Lurgan is surely up there, population of around 20k (40% of which is Unionist) with 5 clubs, which I think is pretty good going. There would also be another 5 GAA clubs within 5 miles of the town. northarmaghgael (Armagh) - Posts: 40 - 31/10/2015 13:52:00 1803326 Link 0 |
Dundalk has eight clubs within the town. OLLIE (Louth) - Posts: 12224 - 31/10/2015 16:14:41 1803359 Link 0 |
Interesting topic. I guess the best way to look at it is on a per capita, or population density, basis. Carrick-on-Suir does pretty well, it only has a population of approx. 5850, but it has 3 clubs (Swans, Davins, and I think St. Mollerans) in its environs. In Mayo all of the towns and villages have one club only, so it wouldn't be us. Believe it's common down in Kerry to have two or three clubs in a town? Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 31/10/2015 19:36:00 1803387 Link 0 |

Gaafarmer that's a lot of clubs for that population. What's the break down with football and hurling clubs in the town? OLLIE (Louth) - Posts: 12224 - 31/10/2015 21:46:42 1803402 Link 0 |
There's 3 clubs in one small parish in Laois - Ballylinan, Arles Kilcruise and Arles Killeen. CmonAymonow (Laois) - Posts: 160 - 31/10/2015 21:53:26 1803405 Link 0 |
Gleebo - ballina has two clubs...Stephenaties and Ardnaree. You could also make a case for Castlebar with Breaffy practically a suburb of Castlebar. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11229 - 01/11/2015 08:12:32 1803408 Link 0 |
Very few towns in Ulster have more than one main club, with possibly a smaller hurling club being the only other GAA unit within that town. Usually large towns have a substantial unionist population which takes away the need for a second club. Exceptions seem to be: northarmaghgael (Armagh) - Posts: 40 - 01/11/2015 11:41:43 1803434 Link 0 |

Newry is definitely up there. Ballyholland and Saval are only a mile or two from Newry as well as Bosco, Shamrocks and Mitchell's from Newry itself. I'm sure Saval and Ballyholland probably have a few players from Newry itself as well. tullyframerover (Down) - Posts: 276 - 01/11/2015 14:38:36 1803463 Link 0 |
Ballylinan and the two Arles teams in Laois and Davins, Swans (Tipperary) and St. Molleran's (Waterford) in Carrick-on-Suir were the two I thought of first. roundball (Tipperary) - Posts: 2514 - 01/11/2015 15:13:59 1803469 Link 0 |

That would be St Pauls, Rossa and Sarsfields roundball. There's probably another 10 clubs within 4/5 miles of those 3. popemobile (Antrim) - Posts: 102 - 01/11/2015 16:29:15 1803485 Link 0 |
Very few towns in Wicklow have much more than one. Bray has 2. Bray Emmets and Feargal Og. Feargal Og are a weak enough outfit. This is real progress for the GAA - Bray was a complete soccer town until the 2000s when great underage work turned Bray from having no underage structures in hurling to now in 2015 being back to back Senior Hurling Champions.
