Having read the other thread on club names this got me thinking - what counties have the most defunct clubs and is there any pattern emerging or correlation between different factors. Obviously clubs come and go over the decades but I'd be more interested in recent years, say the llast 10, 20 or 30 years. I know I can only speak for Armagh and even then my knowledge is somewhat limited, but I know Belfast would have had a few clubs fold in the last ten years or so. northarmaghgael (Armagh) - Posts: 40 - 28/10/2015 10:04:15 1802524 Link 0 |
Tooban HC Fahan Donegal about 4 miles outside Derry City folded about 2000. Think they won a Donegal senior title not long before that. Some players went to Na Magha in Derry City a few to Burt. The lads from there now tend to play with Buncrana or Burt underage. christy sting (Derry) - Posts: 262 - 28/10/2015 15:07:14 1802644 Link 0 |
Here's a piece about London GAA and the formation and extinction of some clubs. Massive differences between now and even 10 years ago. mattybhoy (UK) - Posts: 170 - 28/10/2015 15:17:10 1802648 Link 0 |

In Tyrone there was a Hurling team in Benburb in the 60s, mostly made up from Christian Brothers in the nearby Priory. There was also a Hurling team in the 90s called Clan na Gael (Killeeshil, & Galbally). In football there was a legendary team in the Moortown/Kinturk area called Windmill. Manys a story has been told about the reception received in such a place. lasttoknow (Tyrone) - Posts: 99 - 28/10/2015 15:40:04 1802655 Link 0 |

Lasttoknow.....Benburb also fielded a football team to the late 60/early 70s winning two JFC. I believe the reason the team folded was a lack of investment in the youth as it remains a decent GAA area haven't produced many very good county players who represent clubs such as Eglish, Moy (Tyrone) and AnPort Mor and Tullysaran in Armagh. There was a move made to re establish a club in the mid 1990s but they were rejected by both Armagh and Tyrone county boards...who were worried that there re-establishment may affect existing clubs in the area. Probably rightly so too. Ed (UK) - Posts: 156 - 28/10/2015 18:54:23 1802715 Link 0 |

Donegal Football: Rodger Casements who would now be Milford and Fanad. Rosses Rovers who are now Na Rossa, Dungloe and N. Mhuire. Fintown who amalgamated with Glenties as Naomh Connaill. donegalhills (Donegal) - Posts: 17 - 29/10/2015 10:36:10 1802771 Link 0 |

In Limerick, city club Treaty Sarsfields was a top football club in the 50s and 60s, winning numerous senior county title. Folded in the early 1990s, I think. football first (None) - Posts: 1259 - 29/10/2015 18:27:00 1802965 Link 0 |

The recent increase in insurance costs, particularly public liability, has left quite a few clubs in precarious positions in Belfast. bumpernut (Antrim) - Posts: 1852 - 30/10/2015 12:37:09 1803090 Link 0 |
