Will Donal Og take a Good Press with him to Clare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Donal Og is "an absolute fanatic"
Anthony Daly is ultra enthusiastic about the addition of Cork legend Donal Og Cusack to the Clare senior hurling backroom team

Tomsmith here

I see that Donal Og Cusack has thrown in his lot with Co Clare for 2016.
I just wonder is this what Clare Hurling needs to enjoy a good press.
Clare have in the past been the subject of adverse press reports and maybe the arrival of Donal Og will change all of that and help bring back another All Ireland to the Banner County

I doubt that this is the main motivation behind his appointment but it wouldn't take much to improve Clare's relationship with the press.

Davy is too easy for the press - maybe Donal Og will have a word in his ear and Clare will be making the headlines for the right reasons in 2016.

I'm delighted to see him trying to contribute to what hopefully will be a more competitive Championship next year. I'm disappointed to loose him from the Sunday Game

It just proves all this merry go round is all about money.

Awwwwnow
County: Cavan
It just proves all this merry go round is all about money.

How does it prove that?

How can anyone get involved with a side liable to meet their own county? For example a staunch cork man planning now to beat them after years trying to beat them as a player. Money talks !! I personally couldn't be involved with any team that could possible meet or beat my own county.

Interesting to hear all this talk about money, its an amateur game. Donal Og Cusack has always pushed the agenda of pay for play, just research comments made by him over the years with his GPA hat on. Is he being paid by Clare ? It is a legitimate question to ask or is it a subject that in typical GAA fashion is swept under the carpet just like those who dare ask.

Why are media assuming Donal Og Cusack is going to be such a great coach?

He has zero experience at inter county level and all the good press he gotten is based on nothing.

"All this talk about money"? moc.dna. Ironically the only man to mention money is a Cavan man.

Donal Og has left a paid job in RTE for this and it remains to be seen if he continues his newspaper writing also. Seems to me he will be losing money on this.

Like anyone, their first move into an Inter County set up is taking a chance but it helps if you have almost 20 years Inter County playing experience behind you. Managing your club teams is a bit of a help.

The usual knockers will just love to see him fail.

I don't know about good press but he'll bring a fine selection of dickie bows with him anyway

Of course it's down to money . Do you really honestly think he is going to Clare for the love of Clare hurling??? Wise up. 20 odd years ago one particular manager was on 1 punt a mile, 11,000 pound car and a free use of a house when he was in a particular county. And the reason I know this is I know the bloke who paid him every week. Now that was 20 years ago. And there has been some merry go round since at both inter county and club level. What Donal Og earned in RTE wouldn't keep him in dickybows .

He's very outspoken against the Cork County Board so I dont think joining them at the present moment is an option. So - he has a choose to do nothing or go elsewhere. He has decided to go elsewhere and one of the downsides is that he may face his own County - but on the upside, maybe this appointment will benefit Cork in the future as he will have gained the experience which people are concerned he may lack right now.

All in all - its good to see a colorful character getting involved in the game of hurling. Lord knows it needs to be shaken up a bit.

My brother did it in another county at club level and was well looked after financially and that was a few years ago.

Awwwwnow - I'm not sure what your trying to contribute to this post!

Are you saying the only reason Donal Og is gone to Clare is because of money?

Yes same as any other manager who goes to another county. You really think Canavan was wearing a Fermanagh top for the love of Fermanagh football? Or kiernan or loughnane with Galway tops because they love Galway so much? It's all under the table and it's kept hush hush.

Maybe they like to challenge themselves Awwwwnow

From watching Donal Og on the Sunday game I reckon he's very interested in the game of hurling. Now he's taking it to the next level - challenging his thoughts in a real environment.

I dont think money is the main motivation behind these appointments but it has a part to play. These positions are virtually full time, and if you dont value yourself then dont expect any County board to value or respect you in return.

Awwwnow, sure how would anyone with any coaching aspirations gain any experience in the field if they didn't go to other counties. Club level is one thing but you can only get Inter County experience by going to another county. Not like home county coaches aren't getting paid also.

I think it's a serious appointment by Clare GAA, Donal Og is a serious hurling man, with great tactical awareness

Of course he is being paid to do the job. He is going to be paid expenses. These 'expenses' might be on the generous side but they will be classed as expenses. It is happening in clubs up and down the country. I know of clubs being fleeced so to speak. This is not new and it is a statement of obvious but it doesn't dilute his committment to it. If Donal Og is into something, then he will be properly into it.

Of course we don't know how good he will be as he has no previous managerial/coaching experience. Doesn't everyone start somewhere? There was a time when Brian Cody had none either. Donal Og has actually been doing some coaching with the Down senior hurlers (sporadically) I believe.

I think he definitely would want to be with Cork. I think he would give his right arm to be the Cork coach one day. There is not a hope in hell that the current set up would even look at him though. Cork's loss is Clare's gain.
