Should the GAA be looking into the problem of concussion for its players. The Rte programme on the problem in rugby was frightening. I don't think it is a problem in our game (despite head-butt's apparently flying about) but maybe I'm just kidding myself. What do other posters think? neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 06/10/2015 15:09:49 1796436 Link 0 |

Definitely slayer, and with anti-gouging mesh eyepatches and anti-sledging ear covers. flack (Dublin) - Posts: 1054 - 06/10/2015 17:38:25 1796505 Link 0 |
Watched a really interesting documentary on concussions in sports called 'Head Games' would highly recommend it to anyone who plays sports just as an eye opener and to become more aware of the signs and effects of concussion. Was absolutely amazed with the number of retired NFL players who suffered from mental health issues as a result of concussions. pati (Meath) - Posts: 80 - 06/10/2015 18:12:30 1796520 Link 0 |
It was a really shocking documentary the mother who knew something was wrong with her son but was ignored by the ref and other officials only for him to die a few minutes later absolutely heartbreaking. it's not something to joke about And while it isn't as big a deal in gaelic it does happen, galway goalie o donoghue was knocked out for at least a minute in the game against armagh and he was allowed play on. The study of NFL players shows how many won't show any effects for years galwayfball (Galway) - Posts: 1678 - 06/10/2015 19:47:26 1796557 Link 0 |
No amount of medals or awards will ever make up for sound mental and physical health. The sooner managers, coaches officials and most importantly players realise this the better. We all want to play the game but health needs to be put first. This applies to all sports. Bain (Donegal) - Posts: 470 - 06/10/2015 20:54:54 1796585 Link 0 |

Helmets only provide superficial protection from scalp and eye injuries mostly. The forces required to concuss a player are virtually unaffected by wearing one. Concussion is a huge problem both for hurling and football. Its near impossible to assess properly in the few seconds that you get on a pitch. Its nothing short of ridiculous that we take players off the field for up to ten minutes to tape up a little cut on the hand(something which is part and parcel of hurling) and yet we are forced to make a decision on a concussion on the spot. jpcampion (Laois) - Posts: 194 - 07/10/2015 09:47:42 1796639 Link 0 |

If a player has a suspected concussion he should be taken off even though he will obviously want to play on. These are therules in rugby however it was shown in colleges and underage games (anything not top level) this is completely ignored. To be fair I think if a player suffered at ungrateful in gaelic games most if not all managers would force the players off. However when a player is an adult and it's an important game he will insist on playing on. Up to medics and manager to force him off. galwayfball (Galway) - Posts: 1678 - 07/10/2015 22:01:32 1796954 Link 0 |
