Rossies Dream Team

(Oldest Posts First)

There may have been a post started on this previously, apologies of so. I am wondering what the Rossies think of their new appointment, it ticks all the boxes, can they make the difference to get you to another level? It takes more than a good club team to make a good county team as Armagh have found out, but there are some good quality players in the county, would just doubt if they are ready to break the Mayo dynasty yet.
McHale seems a charismatic enough man, I am not sure why Mayo players didnt want him but would also be good in the setup I think.

Most Roscommon people are very happy with the whole management team, Although a lot of people give out about McStay as a pundit I have always found his knowledge of the game far greater than the likes of Spillane and O'Rourke, He improved an already great Brigids club team and won the All Ireland, But I reckon Mayos loss is Roscommon's gain.
McHale is rated very highly by the players in St Bigids he was and is supposedly a top class trainer in their opinions.
O'Donnell has achieve good success with Roscommon in the past most notably the Minors of 06 and seniors 2010 but I would worry about his CV of recent years, Some baffling's substitutions in 2011 cost us back to back Connacht titles, He greatly under achieve with the minors in 2013 and in recent weeks was involved with Roscommon Gaels and they were shambolic in county semi final losing by 12 points as hot favourites and had zero game plan or plan B, Probably good coach but tactically wise seems to be lacking.
David Casey is a very good appointment done extremely well wit St.Croans intermediate team reaching the All Ireland final and have heard great reviews about him

Think most Roscommon fans are pretty happy, both highly respected within the county. At the end lot of division amongst supporters over Evans, I think McStay was most peoples first choice. I have to say fair play to him for taking it, its very easy sitting in The Sunday Game studio pointing out where teams are going wrong, but now he has to go and back that up as an inter county manager.

Would bd great to see a new team emerge .

McStay is a shrewd analyst and has a good pedigree as a coach, plus obvious knowledge of the local scene. Wouldn't be too far gone on McHale though: came out with some baffling stuff during his time on the coaching staff with Mayo and appears to like the media too much, IMO. In any case, we've been hearing from the Rossies that they will unseat us for the past five seasons, so I wouldn't be unduly worried about them.

Rossie dream team labeled by the media I see proof will be in the pudding as they say.

Just to pick up on one opinion made here, Pingcity the 2013 minors had no great expectations at the start of year yet we went within a kick of the ball from reaching the All Ireland final not sure how you call that underachieving. O Donnell was a selector for Roscommon Gaels this year and under that role I wouldn't be adding to his manager CV however since that poor performance on the day v Pearses they have gone to reach the division one league final.

Thats harsh, as Horan does not get out of the media. AT least McHale is critical and not a yes man like horan.

You are right Jimbo, no All Ireland medals, no millions in sponsorship, don't have hundred of players to pick from and not allowed to play all their games at home. What chance have they to reach the lofty heights attained by Gavin, Caffèy and Co - winning All Ireland year on year.

I was sure McStay would have been the one manager and not in a "joint" capacity.

I'm thinking specifically of some episodes involving McHale, such as his penning a column in the Sunday Independent on the morning of the All-Ireland final in 2004 essentially setting out how Mayo were going to play, or his assertion in 2012 that if Mayo won an All-Ireland that year that we would go on to dominate it for a number of years. Granted, the comments hardly had much of an effect on how Mayo got on at those times, but both events seemed very unwise and I can't imagine someone from the management team in Kerry or Dublin (or any of the major counties, really) doing such a thing.

Also, I don't know where you got the idea that Horan is a yes man. Horan publicly fell out with some high-profile players and the County Board during his time at the helm in Mayo, hardly the actions of a "Yes Man".

Pingcity you are talking a load of rubbish. The reason Roscommon lost the 2011 final was because Shine missed frees while O'Connor scored every free he got. In 2013 our minors kicked that semi final away missing a penalty etc i don't know how you can blame Fergal for that. Pearses are a better team then Roscommon Gaels and I believe it was 8 points the lost by and the did win the league. Fergal is a more proven manager then Mcstay

@Gleebo my ref to horan being a YES man is based on his media work not as a manager as you criticised Mchales media work. Everything I have read from horan was pleasant, nice to ready, BUT exactly what i wanted to read as a manager supporter.. McHale is more honest and the mayo players did not want him for that. They are afraid he would have called them out.
