Don't believe the Indo, it dislikes the GAA and will always run it down. Over 1 million watched the All Ireland far more than watched the Rugger.

The Irish Independent article makes a very triumphalist statement when it argues that 'The figures [from the Ireland/Italy match] dwarfed the1,080,000 who watched Dublin's All Ireland Final victory over Kerry.' The average for the All Ireland Football Final was 875,000. The Rugby Union average was 956,000. The All Ireland Football Final peak was 1,080,000. The peak for the Rugby Union was 1,180,000. Hardly what any fair minded analyst would describe as one dwarfing the other.

Havent read the article but does it include viewing figures for UTV and TV3 and we cant get TV3 on sky in the north and does it take into account sky for the AI?
Im not surprised more people watched the rugby. Its once every 4 years so can appeal more and would likley get more viewers from outside the 2 counties playing in the final watching

Sorry but what's the problem here? There is no clash with the All Ireland final so who cares how high the figure is? Speaking as a member of the GAA and as a person who also grew up playing rugby, I think people have a problem with rugby in this country and it is sad to say the least. What can be done? Get a grip.

Independent doesn't dislike the GAA and doesn't try run it down. Rugby World Cup is once every 4 years. We have very good chance of success so quite likely rugby had higher viewing figures....

Doesn't surprise me at all. Think of all the foreign nationals from countries participating in the RWC that are living here (England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, NZ, France etc.) that would add to the viewing numbers. It's only natural they'd be more interested in watching the Rugby over a sport they've maybe only been introduced to. Don't see why it's being seen as a bad thing?

I have a problem with rugby. Number one problem is I think it's rubbish to watch, 2: it's extremely dangerous, 3: it's elitist, primarily played in private schools and by the children of those who are pathetically trying to drag themselves up the social ladder. Yeah sure you can play junior rugby and maybe you'll get cherry-picked for a bigger club but that's the exception. 4: Irish rugby is primarily at the beck and call of the RFU, with the IRFU basically a lapdog to the RFU. It was pathetic watching Keith Wood "being sad" when England got the bum's rush out of the WC at the weekend, or a few years ago, listening to Eddie O'Sullivan wish England well when playing France - two European teams playing, why support one above the other? And if you were why would you support the one that destroyed us? This is why Ireland are losers, Australia show no respect, maybe that's why they are winners. 5: When the English and French clubs want to change the competitions to suit themselves, they do and poor old Ireland have to follow. And lastly 6: the highest honour for an Irish rugby player - representing the British Lions (I'm sure the everyone knowns that only Irish people call them the British & Irish Lions). Not Ireland but some sort of greater Britain. It's not just sport: this is the ethos behind the union game. And maybe one more, as someone above said, it's the indo's number one game, that should be enough to put anyone off. Skin crawlingly, cringeworthy awful stuff.

Well I don't think it's rubbish to watch, I love the game. GAA will always be my number one and while there are some elitist private school individuals involved in rugby that doesn't mean you write off the grassroots. And as for your comments on Wood and O Sullivan, you need to get that chip off your shoulder. I don't care much for the Lions but that is another point.

So what? We should not feel insecure as GAA members. I enjoy and watch the Rugby World Cup same as most. Anyway viewing figures are not relevant. Imagine all the hundrdes of thousands in the USA, OZ etc watching GAA games every year. Same could be said of Irish fans watching Rugby abroad in fact.

First of all - GAA is best for games - my opinion is nothing touches Hurling ..
I really enjoy the rugby especially obviously the world cup . Love watching Ireland play and also the provinces too. What I don't like is the amount of absolute nonsense written about it . Seriously its horrible over analysis. Its almost like its protesting too much that its not exciting. And don't start me on some of the Rugby journo's and the Indo

I have a problem with rugby. Number one problem is I think it's rubbish to watch, -Fair enough - of course you never see a bad hurling or football game
2: it's extremely dangerous, -in what way - more people get badly hurt driving- so would you view that as being dangerous?
3: it's elitist, -Please give examples of such elitism stating the relevant school club involved- i played gaa and rugby for years i coach now played all over the country - never once in either have i seen such examples of elitism
primarily played in private schools -what about clubs like young munster garryowen letterkenny greystones bandon ballina sligo navan etc- do they all go to private school
and by the children of those who are pathetically trying to drag themselves up the social ladder. -well my lads play hurling football and rugby - i coach at all three and the kids play for the love of sport and the parents are merely trying to give them that love of sport- nothing to do with social climbing
4: Irish rugby is primarily at the beck and call of the RFU, with the IRFU basically a lapdog to the RFU. -please expain this view giving examples
Keith wood lived in england for years and has lots of friends there (think if wife is english) so why would he not support england-whats pathetic about that Also is it acceptable for keith wood to have a different opinion fromyou?
This is why Ireland are losers, - Ireland are six nations champions - but bad for "losers"
Australia show no respect, maybe that's why they are winners. -do they not have the union jack on their flag
5: When the English and French clubs want to change the competitions to suit themselves, they do and poor old Ireland have to follow. -Agree 100%
And lastly 6: the highest honour for an Irish rugby player - representing the British Lions (I'm sure the everyone knowns that only Irish people call them the British & Irish Lions). -fair point- but the official title is the brittish and irish lions and they fly the tricolour and union jack -an irish lad playing for the lion does not automatically become british
Not Ireland but some sort of greater Britain. It's not just sport: this is the ethos behind the union game. And maybe one more, as someone above said, it's the indo's number one game, -does the indo cover gaa at all?

it is possible that you can like both sports -liking rugby doesnt make lad like flaker any less of a gaa lover

"2: it's extremely dangerous,"
From this year alone losing a few youngs lads while on the field of play Id say the GAA is more dangerous (but i dont think it is anyway) Only 2 deaths I know of this year in rugby are in league.......which yes is rubbish

Ormond we have no chance of winning . Hopefully and I mean hopefully we can take France out . That would give us a decent shot at making a semi final for the very first time . We have a dire record at the Rugby World Cup. England, Scotland, Wales and France have all previously made semi finals. We are the only ones who have failed to do so.

I can think of no examples of this but as you are not a rugby I can understand. All my welsh mates simply call them the lions as do most players and pundits alike

4 games away from winning it. id hardly call that no chance and you can judge a future competition simply by past experiences (as shown by england this year). If we did cavan and down might be seen as contenders for nexts years sam

Going with this 'precedent' theory which i dont buy into we will beat france, then Argentina, then either wales and SA (as we have beaten them all recently) and then we just need a bit of luck against the ABs. Hopefully your theory holds

Nothing to do with precedent Doire . We are simply not good enough . Hopefully we can beat France and Argentina and get rid of that awful stat of never having reached a semi final in seven attempts . We are the only one of the five major home nations never to have done so . Twice we have been sent packing before a quarter final. We have lost five quarter finals. That is a very poor record . Hopefully as I have already said we can change all that . As for winning the thing . Dream on . No chance . And I sincerely hope I am proven wrong .
