Just wondering after watching Mayo play all year what Aidan O Shea needs to do to win a free. He has been pulled dragged and hit all year and most of the time he does not get a free. Is there a seperate rule book for fouls on big men as oppossed to fouls on small men. Mfs (Mayo) - Posts: 251 - 03/09/2015 18:31:49 1781589 Link 0 |
Do you think its ok for Aidan OShea to try barge his way through every tackle when he is possession of the ball?? superbluedub (Dublin) - Posts: 2837 - 03/09/2015 20:04:14 1781632 Link 0 |

Superbluedub, more often than not he is penalised for over carrying, not for barging, so your point point in question isn't very valid. However he is entitled to use his physical strength to break through defenders. CanHeKickA45Tho (Mayo) - Posts: 3 - 03/09/2015 20:45:33 1781648 Link 0 |

Every big burly player gets that treatment especially at FF. Eoghan O'Gara, Donaghy, McManus etc all come in for tough treatment because their marker is usually at a physical disadvantage. It's always been the way. The refs always seem to be reluctant to give frees because I think their view is that the big guys should be able to handle it I guess. Big lads get more abuse and refs don't call it. It's not specifically anything to so with Aidan personally. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13692 - 03/09/2015 21:31:08 1781691 Link 0 |

Aidan O'Shea is brilliant for Mayo & brilliant for the GAA. He represents a lot of what is good in the GAA. 6 ft 5, he is trim, has good footballing skills, looks after himself well and if you follow him on twitter, a decent guy. Dublin had to stop him last week and often had 4 men surrounding him - nothing wrong with that, well within the rules. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 04/09/2015 09:04:43 1781754 Link 0 |
It's not ok to foul any player as it will result in a foul against your team and may even result in a yellow , black or red card depending on the foul. Hope that clears things up ! Sean867 (Dublin) - Posts: 25 - 04/09/2015 09:28:48 1781774 Link 0 |
Aidan's well able to look after himself. Be interesting to see if Dublin will deploy 3 or 4 men to mark him tomorrow. pdempsey (Mayo) - Posts: 1313 - 04/09/2015 09:43:15 1781780 Link 0 |
Hopefully the ref will keep an eye on his continual fouling. I won't hold my breath. bangbang (Dublin) - Posts: 113 - 04/09/2015 09:55:41 1781797 Link 0 |
bangbang - your talking rubbish. When a big man gets the ball like that defenders are going to bounce or fall around him. If you were reffing a game Aidan would probably have no business playing football. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11219 - 04/09/2015 10:01:20 1781804 Link 0 |
Pat and Noel will have seen how the Dubs have put 3/4 players on Aidian they are no fools; Mancirish (UK) - Posts: 2200 - 04/09/2015 10:01:27 1781805 Link 0 |
Traditionalists complain about too many handpasses and the game turning into basketball. jason (Mayo) - Posts: 139 - 04/09/2015 10:51:46 1781858 Link 0 |
jason - I agree....complaining about a long ball in GAA...jasus. Now someone is using soccer analysis. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11219 - 04/09/2015 10:55:38 1781862 Link 0 |

Get out the rule book, if your head is downwards like rugby players you are deemed to be charging or barging, if the ceann is up like O'Shea, McAuley etc there is no foul riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 04/09/2015 13:57:07 1782115 Link 0 |
The lack of a clearly defined tackle in Gaelic football comes home to roost. So Aidan has the ball, he attempts to kick/fist the ball and his leg/arm movement and/or body movement is impeded by one or more of the 4 players surrounding him, is this a foul? Is the only physical contact allowed by the 4 players - a shoulder to shoulder contact on Aidan? When Aidan attempts to get past the 4 'tackling' players at what stage is this defined as charging with the ball? As in soccer if the tackling player attempts to slap the ball out of Aidan's possession and doesn't make contact with the ball is this a foul? If Aidan is on the ground and he attempts to stand up and he makes contact with the 'tackling' player is this a foul by the tackler? I could go on but I don't want to bore you! sam2008 (Tyrone) - Posts: 796 - 04/09/2015 14:23:44 1782140 Link 0 |
