Was this the worst semi final ever?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If we take away the excitment of the last 10 minutes where dublin seemed to hit a brick wall it must go down as the worst semi final in history for the standard of football played, lets be real here dublin are a pale shadow of the team they were 2 years ago where was the spark? where was the running off the shoulder? they looked tired predictable and static very undublin like i must add, they are at least 6 points a worse off team from when they won it in 2013, as for mayo they are a very limited side very workmanlike but very average i know the majority of fans from other counties would like to see them win it but would it be really good for football to see such an average team win the biggest prize? for me kerry are on a different planet than these two sides the next 5 years or so will see kerry and tyrone dominate i have no doubt,

I'm going to go out on a limb here, was this the first semi-final you've seen?

Is there such a thing as a bad semi final? The winners will go into the final. The losers are out. A draw means another day.

The 'worst' I can think of was 2011 Dublin 0-8 Donegal 0-6 and even that game was enthralling and on a knife edge all through.

Last Sunday was superb, loved it.

I think Dublin looked like a shadow of the team they were 2 years ago (on the TV I'm guessing) was due to the way Mayo pulled 14 men back into their own half (Blanket defence), very much like Donegal or Tyrone would. It was clear from being at the game. Dublin actually did very well to create some goal scoring chances, mainly due to some great Jack McC runs and Kevin Mac. Remember Kevin took a handy enough point when he was one on one with the Mayo keeper. I think you are getting a bit over excited :)

Im afraid you cant claim it to be the worst semi final of all time and expect everyone to wipe clear the memory of the last 10 minutes

I enjoyed the game from the start..yes the football wasnt great at times but I always felt something would happen before the game was over.

Even with the dubs pulling away in the second half you could still see Mayo had fight left in the them.

When Moran missed the goal chance after cluxtons mistake I thought maybe they had missed their opportunity.

However it was the best last period of a match for excitement and drama i have seen in this years championship.

So no it wasnt the worst semi final of all time..your miles off the mark there

Not that I remember but Mayo v Donegal 1992 semi I have been told was pretty awful. Mayo v Fermanagh first game in 2004 was a bad game too.

Have a look at Mayo b Cork SF in 93. Without checking the records I think the final score was 5-15 to 0-10 to Cork. So NO this def was not the worst SF ever

First post, but i had to reply to this as a neutral. Are you kidding me???? Kerry on a different planet?? Sunday was a game played out - often cagey but full blooded and no quarter asked or given. (cynicism etc. is for a different thread and i dont ignore it). It was exciting and enjoyable in my opinion but for sure - both Mayo and Dublin would give Kerry their fill of it, make no mistake!!

Come on the standard of football was awful if these are 2 of the best 3 teams in the country then standrads are at an all time low, just because a game is exciting dont mean the quality was good in actual fact on second viewing it looked even worse.

My sentiments exactly slayer.A game does not have to be aesthetically pleasing on the eye, free scoring and error free to enjoy.Sundays game, while not hitting the high notes of some memorable recent games(Kerry v Dublin 2013 & Mayo v Kerry 2014),it was absorbing, tense and unpredictable for the duration.Plenty of thrills, spills, hits and talking points galore. So much at stake, huge crowds, craic agus ceoil. It really is the greatest gig in town. And this weekends double helping is mouth watering.

Have to wonder about people who include the term "of all time" in anything they say. Considering there's been about 300 semi finals (including replays) since the 1880s, how can anyone possibly compare them all, and reckon one stands out?

Besides, it was probably Meath-Kerry in 2009. I dont think Kerry even broke a sweat that day, yet it took 1-1 in injury time from Cian Ward to make the scoreboard look close.

Im sure if it was tyrone and armagh who served up such tripe lots of people would agree with me, what im saying is the standard of football played was shocking the excitment levels shouldnt cloud over what was really a terrible game of ball,

I dont like to brag but the GAA better thank Kerry for being involved in the very few exciting games we have had in the last few years.

Against the dubs (2011 2013)
Tyrone (2015)
Mayo x2 (2014)
Cork (most years)
Galway (in the rain)

Ye all can thank the Kerry team here for saving the GAA yet again or go to the main Kerry page whichever is easier..-)

these two teams serve up exciting matches but not in terms of quality it must be said the fianl of 2013 was a poor game won by the better team i must add in all fairness, and for all the hype about the 2006 semi final it was played by two very limited teams at the time as mayo went on to prove in the final where they are trounced after 10 minutes

In a strange kind of way thank god for all the unsavory incidents last sunday only for them there would be little or no discussion here this week because lets face it there was very little football played to talk about.

Just go back to when Connacht and Uslter were pretty dire and you will find some truly awful semi finals, 70's and 80's
