Jim, I salute you sir, your honesty and pragmatism are to be celebrated. Prior to the game on Sunday Jim proclaimed to the world that Dublin will play football the way its meant to be played, and after Sundays fare he clearly meant what he said. Right from the off his team harassed, harried and tried to bully Mayo footballers, on and off the ball, and if it weren't for the determination and grit of this fine Mayo side, his game plan very nearly succeeded. Jim has clearly embraced the new realities of the game, no time for the fancy dan stuff of the early rounds of the Leinster SFC, no, this was Mayo not Meath after all. You see, just like the best manager in the game right now, Kerry's EFM, Jim is finally waking up and smelling the coffee, he knows there's more than one way to skin a cat, he knows that turkey shoots will only take you so far in todays game. brendtheredhand (Tyrone) - Posts: 10897 - 01/09/2015 09:09:07 1779546 Link 0 |

I don't think Jim Gavin is a great manager. You can't win the all Ireland without management skills so he is a good manager, but in my opinion he gets away with things because he has a good team. I thought he was badly exposed by Colm Parkinson in the post Armagh match interview and last Sunday again in a big game his tactics were questionable. His players did go out to hassle & tug shirts and the goading of Aidan O'Shea must have been discussed with the Manager prior to the game. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 01/09/2015 09:54:06 1779574 Link 0 |
Id agree with you slayer. Gilroy was a superior manager for me. Funny, Gilroy played defensively, then gavin changed all that amid big fanfare, but now has gone even more defensive than Gilroy was. Id question the logic of playing Connolly at ff also. Why play him behind a blanket defence? TheMaster (Mayo) - Posts: 16187 - 01/09/2015 10:14:40 1779606 Link 0 |
