County colours

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I was curious when I watched the Mayo/ Sligo game a while back. I think I can remember Sligo used to wear white jerseys, then black jerseys then Black jerseys with a white hoop through the middle this year. Over the years what counties have changed the jerseys they line out in or their traditional colours?. By that I don't mean the small changes but changing away from the traditional jersey they wear. I remember Donegal traditionally wore Kerry style Green jerseys with a gold band through the middle but when they won the semi-final in 1992 in a changed jersey (to avoid a clash with the Mayo jerseys) they stayed with the gold jersey for good after that. Any others ?

The 1957 All Ireland football final between Louth and Cork, both counties changed because both are red and white. Louth wore the Leinster colour of green and Cork wore the Munster colour of blue. Both 2010 and 1982 All Ireland finals all teams involved changed strips. Fermanagh wore red and green for a while in the early 80s and the Dubs used to be blue and white but changed to blue and navy in the 1970s

Kerry wore Red and Green jerseys when they captured their first All Ireland in the 1903 Championship!

I'm open to correction here but did cork only start to wear red in the 20s or something like that. Changed jerseys, won the game and stuck with them since.

The Dingle Colours as they were the County champions if I'm not mistaken.

Cork used to play in Blue and yellow up until the Brits took their jerseys off them in 1919. They borrowed a set of red and white jerseys and stuck with them.

The match there on Saturday saw another unusual situation where both teams changed. Tyrone and Monaghan normally wear white were as due to the clash of Colours
Monaghan changed to Blue and Tyrone changed to speedos.

They dont usually make it far enough in the championship for us to see it, but Antrim have a funny situation with their jerseys. If their footballers clash with another team (e.g Donegal) they wear a black change set. http://www.sportsfile.com/id/880239/

But if the hurlers clash with another yellow team they wear white. http://www.sportsfile.com/id/905298/

The Dubs started wearing Blue and White in 1919. The Vinnies won their first senior championship in 1949.

I have a notion that Roscommon used to play in a hooped jersey as well, ala the old style Clare one, any Rossies clarify this for us I could be mistaken here

I think dublin changed from blue and white to blue and navy because the woman who used to wash the jerseys in them days
left some navy colour top in the wash and the dye ran onto the shorts
she felt it matched better the blue and navy than blue and white
so it stuck from then.

@Richieq

Yes your right. The Rossies did indeed have a jersey like the Claire one.

Counties is it? As we know them, weren't they introduced by the English authorities for taxation purposes, more or less?

You can take this story to any bank... as long as it's a dacent Oirish wan.

Dublin wore the St. Vincents strip in a league final during the 50's V Cavan (I think) otherwise the above is accurate enough!

Remember being at the Ulster final in 1989 Tyrone v Donegal. Donegal were similar to Kerry at that time, green with a gold hoop but have changed over the years to All yellow.
