Why only 42000 at the greatest game in the world?

It's disappointing to see so many empty seats at a semi final? Could the Gaa not discount the upper tier?

Maybe not enough people buy into the view of hurling purists that is is the "best game in the world"??

42,000 isnt a bad crowd considering the senior game in particular was a forgone conclusion before a ball was thrown in, in all honesty.

When people can sit at home and watch it, thus saving their money instead of travelling up then perhaps you can understand it.

Don't understand why the 'best game in the world' is thrown in.

The crowd was poor, I thought you'd see 50,000 at that game yesterday.

Would that not be an average crowd for a Hurling semi final?

There's an on going economic meltdown in many family homes around the country

The only sell outs we'll see in CP will be finals and the bigger semi-finals

As in the 70s with Football, hurling needs the Dubs to start winning All-Irelands and bring in the crowds!!!!

Only solution....

Attendance must have been affected by the general acceptance that Kilkenny would inevitably win. When Kilkenny went 6 pts up in the second half I lost interest. Liverpool-Stoke held more interest by then. This procession of challenge matches for Kilkenny before the are presented with the trophy simply reduces the appeal of the hurling championship. It will be interesting to see if Tipp/Galway attract more people.

I was at the game. Was a little disappointed with the crowd.I was expecting 50,000.Between both counties the popoulation is approx 210,000,so not the biggest. The crowd was evenly matched.I wonder are some KK people, staying away from some games and picking and choosing when to attend.Even the couple of pubs i visited before game, were not as busy as usual.

That wasn't a bad crowd at all. Kilkenny never bring a huge crowd, there is less than 100k in the county and I suppose it's just natural to start taking things for granted after a while. Waterford have had an outstanding year and the county really feel this team could be something special. With their new system and talented youngsters they felt anything was possible even upsetting kilkenny. Last year there was very few going to Waterford's games. If that team had laboured through to a semi final against Kilkenny there wouldn't have got 20k through the Croke Park gates.

Agree with Wayno and DaHaayeser

Excellent crowd yesterday for ultimately was a dead cert KK victory. Great to see Waterford get behind their team as they will have a big year n them soon and will learn for yesterday.

Fiar lay to KK fans to- If I were them would wait until the All-Ireland final.

the GAA do discount the semi final games

However, next weekend's semi final is a much more attractive game as people are sick of going to Kilkenny games.

Well football first thats one problem gaelic football wont have to contend with, dire stuff and even makes soccer look exciting

"I like Mayo. I like them a lot. Thank God for them yesterday, because there was nothing else. As the race to the bottom continues, the conversation in Croke Park was all about whether we'll have a game at all in a decade's time." Joseph Brolly 9 August 2015

41000 is a very decent crowd nowadays . Weird thread - Why cant you judge a sport on how its played as opposed to who wins .. Unless youre a shallow jealous anti-hurling / GAA troll of course ...
I'll never get sick of going to Kilkenny games - At the minute they are a sporting object lesson in skill , teamwork , honesty and endeavour. Throw in an opponent who throws everything at them and thats a game worth watching. The final will be unmissable , just like last years .

greatest game in the world only counts for the final.. The rest have been awful this year and a lot of them rather predictable..

You should never judge quality by the size of the crowd - more punters would show up to watch the Beastie Boys than Beethoven.

Well I do think it is the greatest game in the world. My point is that our Rugby friends in Wales sold out a stadium for a friendly match by selling tickets for £20. I would be worried that even when you have the top teams in the country playing not many neutrals are interested. I wonder if you gave Michael O Leary the other 30,000 tickets to sell how would he get on?

Knowing Michael O Leary, hed probably sell the 30,000 tickets, but be careful when buying a burger or a match day programme.

Ten senior All-Irelands already won by Killkenny this century is too much for the neutral and is effecting attendances.
