League football

(Oldest Posts First)

Looking at today's farce, and several other mismatches this summer, it strikes me that the league should be the premier competition, the games are usually very competitive and with promotion and relegation each team has something meaningful to play for, but one thing is for certain this fallacy cannot continue. It's getting boring and turning people off our games.

Certainly next weeks quarter-finals involving division 1 teams should be very close and competitive.

That's missing the point, 2 or 3 competitive games a year is not enough, the general public need more, we need to sell our games, keep the threat from soccer and rugby at bay. Mismatches are not the way to do this. League football or something similar ir required.

Fully agree. It's embarrassing that the GAA has come to this. And God forbid kerry or mayo go into a lean period because Dublin will never be bad again. They are the only 2 counties preventing the former Killkenny like dominance in football.

But yeah the league and championship should run alongside eachother for the year.

Its a good point but we have been listening for the past few weeks about how tired Donegal are after playing 4 championship games against a mix of Division 1 & 3 teams over 10 weeks. Are amateur players able to play the number of games a league competition requires over a summer?

Teams play 7 league matches in 9 weeks. No mention of tiredness. A lot of the tiredness and injuries comes from the idiots that flog our players to death in training. Soccer has a six week pre season, rugby has a 9 week preseason and then play matches week on week. We have a 4 or 5 month pre season maybe two of them in the one year. We need to promote our games, have a league based system home and away, semi finals and finals in croke park. Something has to be done

I agree the league should take more priority and keep the championship as it is and run it along side the league.

What I love about the league is you are playing every week or every second week. Your not hanging around for weeks on end until your first or next game. Something has to change.

League would be even better played in Summer likewise the All Ireland championship would be pretty ordinary played in Winter / Spring .
