Are Tyrone genuine contenders?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In the last few weeks its something I am hearing time and again....
Tyrone are doing what Tyrone do....slowly building thru the qualifiers....coming good for the right time....showing signs etc etc etc....

listen, no offence to the Tyrone lads on here, i am only giving a football POV here, its nothing against Tyrone, but....for the life of me, I don't see Tyrone as contenders for Sam. Not even close.....

Would Tyrone beat Dublin, Kerry or Mayo??? I dont see it atall. I honestly think if we played Tyrone we would win by a fairly large margin. I am just being honest.

This "dark horse" Tyrone....sorry, for me, literally no chance.

I would tend to agree with you to be honest, we have done nothing really as of yet to warrant being classed as contenders. One good half against a depleted Tipperary side doesnt particularly convince me. However I do think on our day we could cause a shock to every other team, apart from the Dubs. I think we have the ability to beat Kerry/Mayo/Monaghan, but the likelihood of it happening more than once is very very low. The draw has been kind to us, beat Sligo and Monaghan and youre in an AI semi-final. I'd have bitten your hand off for that at the start of the championship...

I can see Tyrone beating Monaghan if they do meet in the Quarter Final, leading to a show down with Kerry in the Semi. That'd be some game!

Tyrone only lost three games in the league. The exact same as Mayo, Donegal and Kerry and only one less than the Dubs. Write them off at your peril

its the media, not the tyrone fans to be fair and yes they'd have a chance against monaghan and could make a semi which would be a very good return.

No, the Q-final (assuming they get over Sligo) should see them ending their campaign.

If Monaghan are serious about taking the next step and being classed as a top four side they need to bring their Ulster form into the All Ireland series, beat Tyrone, and get this Croke Park monkey off their back.

Tyrone would not be able to live with Kerry, anyone saying otherwise is basing their assessment on the nostalgia of a long broken up Tyrone side.

Every so often the championship throws up an outsider in a final where you only have to beat one of the top sides to get there. I can see Tyrone in a semi final.

In 2013 Tyrone did well to get into the All-Ireland semi-final and this year would be exactly the same. That said if Tyrone beat Sligo and then meet Monaghan in a rerun of 2013 they would have a good chance. On this seasons form they would not beat Kerry, Dublin or Mayo. However the run through the back door and possible appearances in Croke Park over the coming weeks should bring players like Harte, Donnelly, McCurry, Cavanagh to the fore and they can become the leaders for some of the newcomers. Old hands like McMahon and Cavanagh will be a great help over the next few weeks and Mickey Harte is still there as a calming influence. It's also encouraging to see teams like Kildare and Fermanagh enjoying good runs through the back door as they build momenteum like Tyrone.

Tyrone would have a chance of beating Monaghan, can't see them winning it out though!

If I had a free bet at who will win Sam my choice wouldn't be Tyrone but in saying that I still wouldn't completely rule them out. It's an outside chance at best but the likes of Peter Harte, Sean Cavanagh and Mattie Donnelly could walk into any county panel in Ireland. McAliskey seems to be gaining confidence in the full forward line at the right time and we shouldn't underestimate the importance of momentum in the championship. If Tyrone bring their confidence coupled with absolute focus they certainly won't fear Kerry. Mayo and Dublin have yet to face a team in the Championship who know what they're doing defensively and we all know what happened Jim Gavin's 'unbeatables' the last time they met such a team in the championship. Tyrone are obviously not a mirror of last years Donegal side but they will be a balanced confident team should they get far enough to meet Mayo or Dublin and if that's the case just watch the odds shorten...

Have had some very lucky draws in the qualifiers to help build up momentum, at least one major upset in the offing, but won't make it into September

We are well capable of beating the dubs as we showed in the league on your home patch.

In fairness I haven't seen anything yet to say we can win the all Ireland but you could say the same in 2008. On paper we have a great set of players with bags and bags of pace. If the show ponies up front click and find consistency in front of the cameras in croke park then you just never know.

Still haven't played at full strength with justy being out but think everyone in tyrone is just happy to see croke park again. I think in a year or 2 we will be serious contenders again.

But as for anything of the big 3, we would relish the chance to get a crack at them in croker. Beat by 3 in the lions den that is ballybofey, beat mayo in the league and drew with the other 2. We aren't too far away.

Absolutely not, when we did face a top county, Donegal, we were well and truly beaten. A trip to Croke park in August is always welcome but we are nowhere near where some people have been saying, and they are certainly not from Tyrone. Next up, Sligo.

Nobody in their right mind believes Tyrone can win an AI...Maybe they have a big game in them, but that's about it.

If Tyrone stay on our Side of the draw then they have a great chance of getting to the final and if they avoid the dubs in that final then they would have a great chance of winning the all Ireland, but if Galway beat Donegal and Tyrone beat Sligo then Tyrone go into the mayo Dublin side and no they wouldn't get to the final and obviously wouldn't win the allireland.

Are we talking about a Tyrone vs Fermanagh all Ireland final? I'm off to the bookies right now.

I suppose a Corkman would know about NO FORWARDS
The guys that sent out Brian Hurley TWICE against Kerry would know a lot about forwards.....

I always give Tyrone full credit for 2003. It's difficult to retain an All-Ireland title or even to make a final in the following year as Dublin and Tyrone know only too well. Tyrone in '05 beat a team trying to retain their title. In '08 they beat a team who having retained their title were going for a 3-in-a-row. There's a good chance of Tyrone again ending Kerry's hopes of retaining another title. It's often forgotten that Kerry made 6 All-Ireland final appearances from '04 to '09.
